What is bacteria?
The definition of moving upmarket strategy
DEFINITIO
N
• Bacteria are single-celled organisms found throughout
our bodies and outside. Many bacteria are not harmful.
• In fact, there are many beneficial bacteria, including
most bacteria that live in our intestines (Gut).
What is antibiotics?
• Antibiotics, also called antimicrobials, are
drugs that fight bacterial infections In
both humans and animals.
• Any time antibiotics are used, they can
cause side effects and lead to antibiotic
resistance.

What is antibiotic resistance?
The definition of moving upmarket strategy
DEFINITIO
N
• Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria
develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed
to kill them.
• When bacteria become resistant, antibiotics
cannot fight them, and the bacteria multiply.
Why should I care about antibiotic resistance?
• Antibiotic resistant bacteria can cause illnesses
that were once easily treatable with antibiotics
to become untreatable, leading to dangerous
infections or even death.
• Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are often more
difficult to kill and more expensive to treat.

WHY ARE BACTERIA BECOMING RESISTANT TO
ANTIBIOTICS ?
• Overuse and misuse of antibiotics allows the
development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Every time a person takes antibiotics, sensitive
bacteria are killed, but resistant bacteria are left to
grow and multiply.
• Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections
like the common cold, flu, most sore throats,
bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections.

HOW DO BACTERIA BECOME RESISTANT TO
ANTIBIOTICS?
• Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics through several ways.
• Some bacteria can “neutralize” antibiotic.
• Others have learned how to pump it back outside. Some bacteria can change
their outer structure so the antibiotic has no way to attach.
• Some one found a way to resist the antibiotics.
• Bacteria can also become resistant through mutation of their genetic
material.
• If even one bacterium becomes resistant to antibiotics, it can then multiply
and replace all the bacteria that were killed off.

WARNING
• The World Health Organization (WHO) report released in April 2014
stated:
• “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is
happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to
affect anyone, of any age, in any country.
• Antibiotic is now a major threat to public health.
• The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control calculated that
in 2015 there were 671,689 infections in the EU and European Economic
Area caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, resulting in 33,110 deaths.
• In US the (AR Threats Report) sounded the alarm to the danger of
antibiotic resistance, stating that each year in the U.S., at least 2 million
people get an antibiotic-resistant infection, and at least 23,000 people die.

ANTIBIOTIC USED IN THE WORLD
Global antibiotic consumption
increased by 65% between
2000 and 2015, from 21.1 to
34.8 billion DDDs.

OVERUSE IN LIVESTOCK
• According to an estimate, about 80% of the antibiotics are
sold in the US only for use as growth supplements and to
control infection in animals.
• Antibiotic use in livestock.
• In another study, a global map of 228 countries was
drawn which depicted the consumption of antibiotics in
livestock; it was estimated that the total antibiotic
consumption was 63,151 tons in 2010

‘DIRTY’ FACTORIES SUPPLY
A new report by campaigning organization Changing
Markets published today reveals, for the first time, the
presence of drug-resistant bacteria at pharmaceutical
manufacturing sites in India.
The report also casts light on the supply chain that links the
factories investigated to companies, public health services
and hospitals in the United States and Europe.
In three Indian cities: Hyderabad, New Delhi and Chennai.
Out of 34 sites tested, 16 were found to be harboring bacteria
resistant to antibiotics.
