Antibiotics have been used to treat and prevent bacterial infections since the 1940s. Unfortunately,
the rate of antibiotic resistance has doubled in recent years, becoming one of the biggest threats to
public health. This resistance has resulted largely from the misuse and overuse of common
antibiotics.

Two studies within Europe illustrate the growing issue of antibiotic resistance. At UEG Week
Barcelona 2019, a study demonstrated that resistance to clarithromycin increased by nearly 22
percent during 2018. Just 20 years prior, resistance to the antimicrobial rose by less than 10
percent. Both metronidazole and levofloxacin resistance also increased in about 18 European
countries. Such antimicrobials protect against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium linked to
lymphoma, gastric cancer, and other stomach conditions.

Meanwhile, the second study focused on the antibiotic ceftolozane-tazobactam. This medication
treats and prevents against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), a bacterium linked to bone
and joint infections, respiratory conditions, and urinary tract infections. Among patients taking
ceftolozane-tazobactam, resistance to the antibiotic was seen after only 22 days.
