Introduction
•It is sporadic acute febrile disease mainly of
cattle; buffalo and sheep
•caused by Clostridium chauvoei
•characterized by sero-haemorrhagic
crepitating swelling in heavy muscles of
gluteal and pre-scapular region due to the
production of toxin.
•It occurs in low-lying swampy grounds and
occurs in hotter months of the year.

Transmission
• It is a soil born infection.
• Contamination of wound,
• Ingestion of Infected feed,
• Sharing, docking, lambing, castration, etc.

Clinical Finding
Cattle & Buffalo
• High fever: 106 to 108ºF
• Pulse rate: 100 to 120/ min.
• Marked lameness with swelling in the upper part
of the limb or shoulder.
• Swelling is painful and hot but soon becomes cold
and painless.
• Crepitation can be felt in the swelling.
• Skin becomes dry, hard and dark.
• Animal dies within 12-36 hrs.
• Mortality-100%

Sheep & Goat
•High fever, Anorexia and depression
•Severe lameness and stiff joint
•No Crepitation
•Swelling of the head due to edema
•Bleeding from the nose
•Dis-coloration of the skin
•Ram is most susceptible than ewes.
•Death occurs quickly.

Diagnosis
• History and clinical signs
• By PM finding
• By Serological---FAT
• Biochemical Tests----LDH, SGOT &
SGPT, are significantly increased.
• By isolation of Cl. Chauvoei - from heart
blood, peritoneal fluid and affected
muscle.
• By biological test : 1ml of infected
materials in guinea pig--death within 48
