Managed Telstra's analogue mobiles B2B and B2C business. Fully achieved A$1.7 Billion
revenue budget – the second largest revenue stream in the whole company. Developed
and coordinated customer relationship strategies to retain and migrate analogue
customers to GSM & CDMA digital networks. Managed 4 staff. Headhunted to join AWA
Plessey Asia Pacific Pty. Ltd.
May 1994 - Feb 1996: Telstra International (Telecom Australia), Sydney, Australia
Senior International Business Development Manager, North Asia/Pacific
Nominee Director and Shareholder’s Representative (Telstra NZ & Kiribati)
Identified and pursued large scale telecomms network investment opportunities in China,
Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, S. Korea, New Zealand and Kiribati. Led multidisciplinary
project teams to scope technical and commercial viability of potential investments with
foreign private and government partners to form appropriate Joint Venture vehicles to
realise such opportunities. Initiated and undertook a major role in the first visit by
Telstra’s CEO to the People’s Republic of China, involving negotiations with the head of
China’s new second telco (China Unicom), three ministers and a vice – premier. My
efforts resulted in Telstra being invited to partner China Unicom in developing telecoms
infrastructure in Henan and Hebei provinces and the establishment of Telstra’s office in
Beijing. Led the drafting and management of investment proposals to the Telstra Board
and liaised with legal and other professional advisors both in Australia and China to lobby
for necessary approvals for such investments. Nominee Director and Shareholder's
Representative for two of Telstra's overseas companies (Kiribati and New Zealand) and
managed 10 people. Transferred internally at my request to gain experience of mobile
communications.

Feb 1992 - May 1994: Alcatel Business Systems International (ABSI), Paris, France
Director, Asia Pacific Region
General management and new business development for the division in 12 countries in
the Asia Pacific region, including China and India. Led a multidisciplinary team in four
offices in Paris, New Delhi, Beijing and Singapore selling ABSI's full business range (PBX,
Key Systems, terminals and other B2B telecomms products and services). Initiated
technology transfer joint venture start – ups in China and India and achieved ABSI's first
technology transfer Joint Venture (in Shanghai, China). Managed a multidisciplinary staff
of 15 and via a combination of the Shanghai joint venture start-up and regional sales
partners increased regional turnover from US$10M in 1991 to US$25M in 1993.
Headhunted and transferred to Australia by Telstra Australia.
Aug 1990 - Feb 1992: Alcatel Business Systems, London, U.K. and Paris, France
International Business Development Manager
New business development of a range of B2C telecommunications products in six
countries across Western Europe, via Alcatel's national subsidiaries, government telcos,
distributor / dealer networks and retail chains. Managed 7 staff. Promoted and
transferred from London to the Paris H.Q. and later promoted again and transferred to
ABS International.
Oct 1984 - Aug 1990: NEC Business Systems (Europe) Ltd., London, U.K.
Marketing Manager, Telecommunications Division
Led strategic planning and marketing of NEC ‘NEFAX’ brand in 6 European countries. Won
board approval to change sales channel strategy from a direct selling model and built a
nationwide dealer/retailer network model; designed and managed appropriate pricing
and margin structures for such channels; launched 15 new products; managed an
Integrated Marketing Communications budget of £5M including the first use of TV
advertising by NEC in Europe. Helped to increase divisional revenue from £15M to £100M
and took the brand to No.1 market share in the U.K. Also held full profit and loss
responsibility (£15M revenue) for NEC's Key Systems business in the U.K. and Italy and
took a leading role in the launch of NEC's first PBX product in Europe. Managed 9
multidisciplinary staff. Undertook frequent overseas travel for new product development
and commercial negotiations with European distributors and NEC headquarters in Tokyo.

May 1982 - Oct 1983: Presco Buildings Ltd., Shrewsbury, U.K.
Marketing Manager
Marketed the company's range of portable and modular system buildings to a wide
variety of B2B customers. Revised the company’s strategy and structure to reduce risk
from reliance on traditional customer industries with pronounced seasonality, and
introduced formal marketing planning systems. Introduced and maintained a DEC
minicomputer-based sales prospecting system in support of the direct sales force to
increase efficiencies via directing its efforts, capturing sales data and facilitating
integration with direct mail and telemarketing. Helped to increase company turnover
from £3M to £8M under depressed economic conditions. Left to return to business
school to study for MBA.

Developed and launched a new B2C product range for one of the company's 18 identified
key product lines via a nationwide network of wholesale and retail chains. Fully achieved
£5M revenue budget. Left to gain broader market experience.

U.K.’s largest automotive manufacturer. Completed comprehensive 4-year management
training program, combining in-company commercial placements with periods of
academic study. Gained hands-on experience in National, Regional and Dealer Sales

and Merchandising; Finance and Engineering. Key achievement was acting as
business/engineering liaison between the Marketing and Engineering teams responsible

May 1994 - Feb 1996: Telstra International (Telecom Australia), Sydney, Australia Senior International Business Development Manager, North Asia/Pacific Nominee Director and Shareholder’s Representative (Telstra NZ & Kiribati) Identified and pursued large scale telecomms network investment opportunities in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, S. Korea, New Zealand and Kiribati. Led multidisciplinary project teams to scope technical and commercial viability of potential investments with foreign private and government partners to form appropriate Joint Venture vehicles to realise such opportunities. Initiated and undertook a major role in the first visit by Telstra’s CEO to the People’s Republic of China, involving negotiations with the head of China’s new second telco (China Unicom), three ministers and a vice – premier. My efforts resulted in Telstra being invited to partner China Unicom in developing telecoms infrastructure in Henan and Hebei provinces and the establishment of Telstra’s office in Beijing. Led the drafting and management of investment proposals to the Telstra Board and liaised with legal and other professional advisors both in Australia and China to lobby for necessary approvals for such investments. Nominee Director and Shareholder's Representative for two of Telstra's overseas companies (Kiribati and New Zealand) and managed 10 people. Feb 1992 - May 1994: Alcatel Business Systems International (ABSI), Paris, France Director, Asia Pacific Region General management and new business development for the division in 12 countries in the Asia Pacific region, including China and India. Led a multidisciplinary team in four offices in Paris, New Delhi, Beijing and Singapore selling ABSI's full business range (PBX, Key Systems, terminals and other B2B telecomms products and services). Initiated technology transfer joint venture start – ups in China and India and achieved ABSI's first technology transfer Joint Venture (in Shanghai, China). Managed a multidisciplinary staff of 15 and via a combination of the Shanghai joint venture start-up and regional sales partners increased regional turnover from US$10M in 1991 to US$25M in 1993. Headhunted and transferred to Australia by Telstra Australia. Aug 1990 - Feb 1992: Alcatel Business Systems, London, U.K. and Paris, France International Business Development Manager New business development of a range of B2C telecommunications products in six countries across Western Europe, via Alcatel's national subsidiaries, government telcos, distributor / dealer networks and retail chains. Managed 7 staff. Promoted and transferred from London to the Paris H.Q. and later promoted again and transferred to ABS International. Oct 1984 - Aug 1990: NEC Business Systems (Europe) Ltd., London, U.K. Marketing Manager, Telecommunications Division Led strategic planning and marketing of NEC ‘NEFAX’ brand in 6 European countries. Won board approval to change sales channel strategy from a direct selling model and built a nationwide dealer/retailer network model; designed and managed appropriate pricing and margin structures for such channels; launched 15 new products; managed an Integrated Marketing Communications budget of £5M including the first use of TV advertising by NEC in Europe. Helped to increase divisional revenue from £15M to £100M and took the brand to No.1 market share in the U.K. Also held full profit and loss responsibility (£15M revenue) for NEC's Key Systems business in the U.K. and Italy and took a leading role in the launch of NEC's first PBX product in Europe. Managed 9 multidisciplinary staff. Undertook frequent overseas travel for new product development and commercial negotiations with European distributors and NEC headquarters in Tokyo. May 1982 - Oct 1983: Presco Buildings Ltd., Shrewsbury, U.K. Marketing Manager Marketed the company's range of portable and modular system buildings to a wide variety of B2B customers. Revised the company’s strategy and structure to reduce risk from reliance on traditional customer industries with pronounced seasonality, and introduced formal marketing planning systems. Introduced and maintained a DEC minicomputer-based sales prospecting system in support of the direct sales force to increase efficiencies via directing its efforts, capturing sales data and facilitating integration with direct mail and telemarketing.
