This chapter discusses safety considerations for incident safety officers (ISOs) at wildland and interface zone fires. It covers wildland fire terminology related to fire growth and behavior. The chapter identifies six situations that may require appointing an assistant safety officer at a wildland fire, including when there are multiple divisions, branches, groups, or task forces operating in different locations or risk situations. ISOs are responsible for identifying actions that could threaten firefighter safety, classifying hazard types, and monitoring ongoing incident conditions. Fire growth factors in wildland and agricultural areas like fuel, weather, and topography are also reviewed.
