October 2009 TO 2013 – CONSTRUCTION MANAGER / PROJECT MANAGER
Employed as a Project/Construction Manager for “stay in business“ projects at a open pit Iron Ore mine
in the Northern Cape, South Africa.
The company follows strong corporate governance, and has developed a “Project Way” which is referred
to as the ADM. ( Asset Development Management ) This guides the Project Manager through the study
phase of the project from concept, per-feasibility ,feasibility, funds release, procurement,
implementation and finally, close out. The ADM, was introduced when I started as PM, and had it’s
teething problems but I gained valuable experience through being involved with the consultants and
networking with the other PM's. As a team we would hold workshops on issues with the system
and recommend corrective measures.
Head Office project assurance team reviewed project progress at regular intervals so by the time the PM
reached the Funds Release gate he could satisfied all stake holders that the risks ( business, health and
safety, etc.) had been identified and mitigation mechanisms were in place.
As with all projects today Safety, Health and Environment considerations played a vital part in the
success of all projects and special attention to these requirements necessitated close liaison with the
guardians of these disciplines.
Initially employed as Construction Manager at the same mine. My responsibility was to manage the
implementation of a group of projects that were referred to as the "Mini Projects", the total value of
these projects was +/- R 180 mil. With a relatively small team of sub contractors, we managed to
complete these projects in less than a year. The disciplines involved in these projects was structural, civil,
mechanical and electrical.
May 2006 to August 2009
SITE ERECTION CONSULTANT
Responsible for the site erection of communication towers in a number of African countries. Towers
were supplied by the company to clients who erect them in the field. I traveled to these sites and
advised the local contractors on the correct erection methods including the civils and structural steel
erection. The job entailed close liaison with client, subcontractors and the logistics of work in Africa and
technical support in the field.
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER
Construction Manager at Sishen Iron Ore Mine. Responsible for the structural erection of buildings and
installation of all crusher related equipment i.e. conveyors, feeders and chutes etc. for the primary,
secondary and tertiary crusher plants. Disciplines involved Structural, mechanical and piping. The site
labour peaked at 380 site personnel. Contract value +/-150 mil
