3. Giving BackThrough Education
I am considering a career in education, so I wanted to do
something for my hometown school that would serve as a trial
for my career aspiration as well as community service
5. Giving BackThrough Education
I came in the first day of winter break and talked with my old
math professor, Dr. Brown. It was then when we decided to set
something up at a larger scale, where a bunch of alumni came
back to help tutor struggling kids in their perspective subjects.
I was put in charge of handling the next couple of days, which
included rallying up alumni, creating a lesson plan, etc.
6. Giving BackThrough Education
Overall, the event lasted two days, in which a dozen alumni
came back to tutor kids in math, language arts, and even music.
It was a great way to gain an inside perspective on how a middle
school is run, as well as exposed me to managing a group of
people.
7. From the Readings…
From our readings, the metaphor or theory that applied the
most, to my situation, would be the orchestra metaphor.
I felt very much like a conductor, who “chooses the music,
find[s] the right musicians, and perform[s] – in public”(Exploring
Leadership – For College StudentsWhoWant to Make a Difference,
pg. 54).
Since I was in charge of planning, conducting, and overseeing
the whole event, I can definitely pull form the experiences of a
jazz conductor.
8. FutureApplication
This experience has done a lot for me, especially when it comes
to project management. Before the tutoring event, I never had
any legitimate experience with overseeing a project or event,
and never really had a job that entailed giving people under my
wing directions and instruction.
9. Time Management
In terms of skills that I gained, I definitely learned a lot about
time management. It is very difficult to stick to a planned day,
without deviating from the allotted time.
Before this tutoring day, I wouldn’t have been okay with not
being able to complete a certain activity with the time I have
given it in my plan. After the event, however, I had realized that
staying true to a plan that was constructed to fit an entire school
day is almost impossible. It isn’t about sticking to a plan, but
rather learning how to accept the lateness, and still stay on task
and on time.
10. For the Future…
This experience has been a great learning tool for basics of
management. For my internship, if there was ever a job that
required instructing multiple employees to perform various
tasks and jobs, I will be able to effectively use the lessons that I
learned from tutoring at my middle school, which would give
confidence to me as well as my employer.
Also, I would realize that project management isn’t necessarily
about sticking to your plan exactly, but rather adapting to
changes, and still getting the project done.
