Vibe Magazine Cover Analysis Focuses R&B Hip Hop Artists
1. Music Magazine Analyst (1)
Vibe magazine was launched by Quincy Jones in 1993 and is based in New York City. The magazines
main focus is R&B, Hip hop music artists and features some black actors and entertainers. I chose
VIBE because it’s a similar magazine to mine, all about young black hip entertainers.
Masthead
The word ‘VIBE’ which is the masthead is defined as a distinctive but intangible quality surrounding a
person or thing which our case, the masthead is talking about the star’s latest vibe. The masthead
will appeal to young urban members of society looking for the latest news on their favourite stars.
The masthead is written in white colouring which is very bright and looks even brighter in front of a
dark coloured background, it looks very thick and bold and very large written which does well on
standing out and attracting the reader’s attention. The reader can see the stars face covering the
masthead which could be a bit inappropriate but since the magazine is very well known and popular
around the young faces, the producers might not need to show the masthead as much.
Main Image
2. This magazine front cover is made of a medium close up shot of the star looking straight into the
camera. The star is looking straight into the camera with his head slightly tilted to his right. He is
wearing a plain red t-shirt, a blue era cap which is tilted to the opposite side to his head. The main
image and masthead has a link. The link which suggest that this is a new Chris Brown and he has got
a new vibe
Major Cover Lines
The major cover line refers to Chris Brown (main image) asking “IS THAT CHRIS BROWN?”. This is
written in big bold white writing which could really make the reader think how Chris Brown have
changed or grown up. This pushes the whole idea of the word “VIBE” by asking if Chris Brown has
changed his ways or has grown up in some sort, pretty much letting the readers know what he’s new
vibe is.
Cover Lines
On the left side there is 10 coverlines which are written in much smaller writing which is pretty much
letting the readers know what’s inside the magazine. The stars mentioned in the front page are all of
3. black background (mainly African American). Which suggest that this whole magazine is mainly
surrounding of black heritage and talented African American’s.
On the left side there is another normal cover line which suggests that it’s a quote from the star.
“I’m Still a VIRGIN in your Eyes”. It’s written in black except for the word “VIRGIN” which kind of
shows that Chris Brown is not young anymore; he’s a grown man and wants people to see it. This
goes hand in hand with the heading “VIBE”, showing Chris Browns new vibe.
