TIGER BILLS WHITLEY BAY
Tiger Bills
Earns its Stripes
The combination of both Thai and American food under one
roof may seem unusual, but it is a recipe which appears to work
at Tiger Bills, as Alison Abbott found out when she visited.
W
hen it comes to deciding where
we are going for a meal, there is
often a bit of conflict. Whose ‘turn’
is it to choose what nationality we
go for? Not this time! The lovely
husband loves a steak and one of my favourite
foods is Thai. With Tiger Bills, we are both happy.
Tiger Bills in Whitley Bay opened in November
and has gone from strength to strength. The
restaurant sells the best of American-style grills,
burgers, steaks and salads and has a Thai menu
of stir fries, curries, noodles, rice dishes, soups...
What’s not to like?
We went on a miserable Sunday night and were
greeted warmly, shown to a really comfy booth
and given our menus.
It was explained to us that one side is the Thai
menu and the other the grill. This is an excellent
place for families, given both its vast choice and its
children’s menu. There are intimate tables for two
available, as well as larger seating areas for groups.
I must say, there is an excellent drinks menu as
well - good wines, beers, cocktails etc. Chris can’t
pass up the chance for a Tiger on draft, so he was a
happy bunny. I decided just to have a diet Pepsi.
Our waitress for the evening, Sophia, was more
than happy to explain the different dishes to us,
especially some of the Thai ones which I hadn’t
tried before. Sophia had excellent people skills and
revealed she was actually about the embark on a
career in nursing! We think she’ll be great.
Anyway, back to the food. We decided that
the best thing was for Chris to do one side of the
menu and me the other. We always try each other’s
anyway, so win-win!
Chris started with the Deluxe Potato Skins with
turkey, bacon and cheese, from the American
menu. Basically a meal in itself! Half a dozen
hollowed-out skins with just the right amount of
filling, all served with a tomato chutney and mixed
leaves. USA on a plate.
I went for the Khanom Pung Na Gai - minced
chicken with herbs, spread on toast, deep fried
and served with sweet chilli sauce. Really tasty and
something I hadn’t tried before. It was deliciously
crispy and I would definitely order it again. It was
also a favourite with our waitress, apparently!
For his main, Chris went for the Boulevard
Rump - chargrilled steak with a jacket spud and
peppercorn sauce. Absolute perfection and
cooked exactly as requested. The meal was well
proportioned and came with creamy coleslaw and
crisp salad; you could tell everything was made
using good quality ingredients.
For my main course I had the Beef Pad Thai.
Wonderful flavours, tender beef fillet and lovely
presentation - the chopped nuts gave it an
authentic Thai look.
All the portions were very hearty and we
wouldn’t have been able to do justice to a dessert...
so we didn’t.
The chef at Tiger Bills Whitley Bay hails from
Thailand originally, but trained in Torquay to get up
to speed with the Tiger Bills concept of both Thai
and American food. Whatever he learnt, it was spot
on as both cuisines were just as you would hope.
I really love Tiger Bills - the food, the people, the
atmosphere and this will definitely become one of
my regular haunts. See you there! L
