MONTHLY GARDEN OUTING
This month we are visiting Rhonda
Johnstone's Garden and then to
see our own Phillip Lane's garden

COMING UP
 What's happening?
The Spring Garden Competition is all over for another year
but it was as popular as it has ever been. Presentation Night
on the 15th of September was a great night. I think the Mayor
summed it up nicely when she said that she attends many
functions but attending the Spring Garden Presentation Night
is always a joy because everyone is happy, there are beautiful
gardens being celebrated, food is yummy so a good night is
always guaranteed. Many of the winners were such inspiring
people, we just loved meeting them. 😊
The Bunnings BBQ is on again. - Saturday 25th of November.
This is our big fundraiser for the year and provides the all
important safety net for the costs associated with running the
Spring Garden Competition. Bunnings require that the BBQ
be a sausage sizzle so we will be sizzling up quite a few
bangers on the day. Hope you can come along for an hour or
two . Many hands make light work and after the fun you can
pop into Bunnings. If you had told me before I retired that
Bunnings would soon be my most visited shopping
destination , I never would have believed you!
Christmas Party The year is fast coming to a close and soon
we will be planning the Christmas party. We have not booked
anything yet, but will discuss the options at the next meeting
so come along and help us decide where it should be. Jane
has a Christmas surprise ... be scared 😉
AGM is always set for the November meeting. We would like
our club to be a happy, vibrant organisation and this happens
with lots of participation. Don't feel that you need to attend all
meetings, functions or outings to be on a committee. With
broad participation we can help each other and have fun in
the meantime.
Cheers,
Sue

Report
October 2017 (Peter
Kimber)
With all the construction
work and changes happening at the airport there were no
security supervisors available to be with troops in October,
but we do hope that things will be back to normal for
November and December. If you are planning on coming
along, give me a call to confirm.

Welcome New Members
Kerry Howard found out from her friend, Mary Booth, that we
are a friendly group and had decided to join our Garden
Club. Heather hails from Sydney and decided in around 2007
that the mid north coast was a perfect spot to retire - about
halfway from one son in Sydney and one daughter in
Brisbane. Heather loves how fast everything grows here
maybe not the grass! Kerry has joined us at a couple of
meetings already and says she loves seeing everyone's
entries on the competition table because it is a good way to
see what grows really well here . Kerry especially loves the
trading table and the plant sharing that we are so good at.
Welcome, Kerry
Trish Welsh is not really a new member, everyone knows Trish
from a couple of years back. From time to time we all have a
few too many things to keep juggling so Trish had a short
break from the club, but she missed us too much and now she
is joining us again. Welcome back, Trish.
FLOWER OF THE MONTH
Flanders poppy
KINGDOM Plantae
ORDER Ranunculales
FAMILY Papaveraceae
GENUS Papaver
A favourite heirloom flower and one
of the most widely recognised
flowers for its significance in
honouring fallen soldiers on
Remembrance Day. It's always one
of the first spring flowers to bloom
on the battlefields of France, and it's
commonly said to symbolise the
blood of lost soldiers.
A few years ago seeds were
distributed far and wide by Maria
Bell. If you are lucky, maybe your
poppies are coming up year after
year. Mine are! Yippee.

The October Outing.
The first Thursday of the month is always the outing day and our last outing was to visit a number of gardens
in the Boambee Gardens Retirement Village. A few of our
members live there and it was such a treat to go and see their
wonderful gardens. Not only were the gardens shared, we were
treated to a most delicious morning tea with
some delicious home made treats.
Thank you to all our members from Boambee
Village who treated us so well. It was certainly
worth blowing the carb count for the day!

What's Coming Up
Saturday 21 October (1:00pm for 1:30pm)
Usual location - Display room at Botanic Gardens, Hardacre
Street Coffs Harbour. Come along at 1:00pm for the competition
table and trading table and to say your hellos. Margaret has
invited Darren from New Life Farm to come and tell us about his
permaculture adventure. Have a sneak preview by checking out
his new website, www.newlifefarm.com.au. I really hope he can
make it. 🤞
Wednesday 1 November (9:15am)
CHGC have maintained the airside garden at the Airport for
some years. Led by Peter Kimber, usually about half a dozen
willing workers spend around an hour tending the garden.
Together, they have created an impressive entry to Coffs for
visitors. If you would like to join in, meet at 9:15am outside the
Admin Bldg and if you have not been before bring photo ID.
with the construction issues lately, it is a good idea to call Peter
on 6650 0985 if you are intending to go - just to be sure, to be
sure.
Thursday 2 November
Usual meet at the Gardens at 9:30 to car pool.
We are visiting 2 gardens .
First stop is Rhonda Johnstone's garden at 11 Ripping Close
Coffs Harbour. Rhonda is a friend of Marg Franks from Whoopie
garden club.
Second stop is Phillip Lane's garden at 36 Grant Close Coffs
Harbour. Phillip is a member of our club.
Lunch will be at the Greenhouse Tavern.
Saturday 25 November
Bunnings BBQ from 8 am to 4pm. Pop it into your diary, would
be great if we had enough participation so that each person only
needed to do a 2 hour shift. 🤞 🤞

Led by Peter Kimber, usually about half a dozen willing workers spend around an hour tending the garden. Together, they have created an impressive entry to Coffs for visitors. If you would like to join in, meet at 9:15am outside the Admin Bldg and if you have not been before bring photo ID. with the construction issues lately, it is a good idea to call Peter on 6650 0985 if you are intending to go - just to be sure, to be sure. Thursday 2 November Usual meet at the Gardens at 9:30 to car pool. We are visiting 2 gardens . First stop is Rhonda Johnstone's garden at 11 Ripping Close Coffs Harbour.
