3. Introduction
Technical fouls
• Less serious in nature
• Usually someone trying to gain a small advantage by the breach of
a rule
• There are 16 types of technical fouls
• Penalty:
• Ball awarded to the other team if in possession OR
• 30 seconds time served if not in possession OR
• Ball awarded to the other team if no possession (loose ball)

4. Introduction
Pushing
• A player may only push the ball carrier, or a player with 3 yards of
a loose ball or ball in flight
• A player may not push from the rear with either stick or body
• Equal pressure / blocking is legal
• A pushed player must be disadvantaged for a pushing foul

5. Introduction
Holding
• A player cannot hold an opponents body with his own crosse
• A player cannot hold an opponents crosse with his own crosse,
except when:
• The opponent is within 3 yards of a loose ball or ball in flight
• The opponent is in possession of the ball
• Using the free hand to gain an advantage is holding
• Using the part of the stick between the gloves to guide / direct a
player with equal pressure is holding

6. Introduction
Off side
• A team can have a maximum of 6 players on the offensive half and
a maximum of 7 players on the defensive half
• Players in the penalty box count towards the total of players that
can be on one half
• When 3 or more players from one team are in the penalty box at
the same time, a time may have one player come out of their
defensive goal area to take the face off, but he must obey the off
side rule
• When 4 or more players from one team are in the penalty box at
the same time, a team is required to have 3 players on the
offensive half

7. Introduction
Interference
• Interfering with an opponent further away than 3 yards from a
loose ball or ball in flight
• Preventing unrestricted movement of an opponent who is not the
ball carrier
• Exception: legal pick

8. Introduction
Illegal pick
• A pick is where a player sets their feet before contact is made by
the opposition player to legally block their path
• The picking player must stand in a normal posture and be
motionless when the defender runs into him
• No swaying / leaning
• No widened stance
• Stick may not be next to the body

9. Introduction
Warding off
• A player with the ball can protect his crosse from stick checks with
his body, usually the arm and hand
• The arm and hand must be (relatively) stationary
• May not direct the movement of the opponents stick or body

10. Introduction
With-holding the ball from play
• A player cannot with-hold the ball from play in any manner:
• Lying on a loose ball
• Trapping a ball on the ground for a long time
• Holding the ball against his body
• Thumbing the ball in his stick
• When a player looses his stick and the stick lands on the ground
with the ball still in or under the head of the stick it is with-holding

11. Introduction
Illegal stick (technical)
• All violations of the rules about the stick (rules 15 and 16):
• Pocket too deep
• Strings with a hanging length of two inches
• No solid end of the stick
• Exception: violations under unsportsmanlike conduct rule
• If a player’s head comes of in the act playing the game, that player
has committed the technical foul of using an illegal stick

13. Introduction
Illegal procedure
• This is a catch-all penatly that covers a wide area of the rules:
• Illegal substitution
• Failure to be at least 5 yards away on a restart
• Illegal time out request
• Leaving the goal area before possession at face off
• Having too many men on the field
• Delay of game
• Playing without a crosse or required equipment
• Too many longsticks (>4) on the field

14. Introduction
Other technical fouls
• Stalling: teams must make a reasonable effort to attack
• Crease violation: an attacking player touches the crease area
• Re-entry of the crease: a player in possession enters the crease
• Handling the ball: using hands to play the ball
• Kicking an opponent’s crosse: using feet to interfere with a crosse
• Illegal actions with the crosse
• Illegal actions by team officials
• Illegal equipment
• Thrusting the crosse at the face of an opponent
• Lateness: not being ready to start the game at the appointed time
