Face off violations
• The procedures and rules surrounding the face off have been
discussed in other sections of this course and the course ‘Men’s
Lacrosse Basic Rules’, this section will list and explain the most
common face off violations.

3. Face Off
Face off violations
• Incorrect set up: player does not set up correctly
• Warning(s) first, depending on level of play
• Called as illegal procedure (technical)
• Early movement: moving stick or hands after set and before the
official blows the whistle
• Called as illegal procedure (technical)
• Line violations: other players crossing wing line before the whistle
or the restraining line before possession or free ball
• Called as illegal procedure (technical)
• Kicking the stick: using foot to move to opponents’ stick
• Called as kicking the stick (technical)

Face off violations
• Deliberately using hand or fingers to play the ball
• Called as unsportsmanlike conduct (personal)
• Deliberately using hand or fingers to grab opponents’ stick
• Called as unsportsmanlike conduct (personal)
• Other players stick checking any face off player that is down
• Called as illegal procedure (technical)
• Other players body checking any face off player that is down
• Called as illegal bodycheck (personal)

5. Face Off
Face off officials’ tips
• Face offs have to be quick
• Being down in face off position is an uncomfortable position
• The time between goal and face off has to be minimal
• With a running clock, 10 face offs taking more than 30
seconds cost 5 minutes of playing time
• The target from goal signal to face off whistle is 20 seconds
• An official always needs to be ready before the players are
• There will almost never be a 100% perfect set up
• As long as one player does not have an advantage, move on
with the face off
• Always tell face off players what they did wrong when you call
illegal procedure
