• There are three kinds of fouls:
• Expulsion fouls
• Personal fouls
• Technical fouls

4. Introduction
Expulsion fouls
• Most serious in nature
• Last resort, rare fouls
• Used on anyone who is disregarding all normal behavior or
sportsmanship
• Penalty:
• Player is expelled from the game AND
• 3 minutes time served (by in-home) AND
• Ball awarded to the other team

5. Introduction
Personal fouls
• More serious in nature
• Danger, intention, recklessness
• There are 6 types of personal fouls
• Penalty:
• 1, 2 or 3 minutes time served AND
• Ball awarded to the other team

6. Introduction
Technical fouls
• Less serious in nature
• Usually someone trying to gain a small advantage by the breach of
a rule
• There are 16 types of technical fouls
• Penalty:
• Ball awarded to the other team if in possession OR
• 30 seconds time served if not in possession OR
• Ball awarded to the other team if no possession (loose ball)

7. Introduction
Slow whistle (flag down)
• Used when the team in possession is fouled and in the opinion of
the referee a scoring play is imminent
• A yellow is thrown to signify a delayed foul
• The attacking team must be making an attempt to go to the goal
and score: imminent scoring play
• The attacking team gets one shot

8. Introduction
Imminent scoring play
• The scoring play is considered to have been completed when:
• The attacking team loses control of the ball
• The ball goes behind the goal twice
• The attacking team takes a shot
• The attacking team brings the ball out of the attack goal area
• The ball hits the pipe or goalie, and then hits any player
outside the crease area

9. Introduction
Play on
• A play on is used on loose ball technical fouls only to help speed
up the game
• If the offended team would be disadvantaged by blowing the
whistle, the official will raise his arm and call “play on!”
• If offended team gains possession the official will lower his arm
and call “play on over!”
• If possession is not gained by the offended team, the official will
blow the whistle and award the ball to the offended team

10. Introduction
Serving a penalty
• If time needs to be served for a penalty:
• The offending player must sit down or kneel in the penalty
box
• Time starts when he sits or kneels or when the whistle blows
to restart play, whichever is the latter
• The last 5 seconds he or a substitute may kneel down in the
substitution box on the half nearer to his own teams’s bench

11. Introduction
Serving a penalty
• Every time out stops penalty time
• Penalty time does not stop after a goal
• A goal wipes out any and all technical penalties on the team
scored against
• Personals are never wiped

12. Introduction
Restarting play after a penalty
• Restarting play:
• 20 yards away from goal
• 5 yards away from substitution area
• All players must be 5 yards away from player with the ball
• Free clear:
• If a foul is committed in the offended team’s defensive half of
the field, the ball shal be moved to the nearest point on the
center line

13. Introduction
Restarting play after a penalty
• The offended team shall get possession at the center:
• If the foul occured prior to the start of the game
• If the foul occured after the scoring of a goal
• If the foul occured after a quarter or overtime period
• If a period ends with a player in the penalty box:
• If the ball was loose when the period ended: face off
• If the ball was in possession of a team: retain possession
• If the ball would have been awarded to a team: possession
