The Chief Bench Official
• The CBO has the same jurisdiction as an on field official, but his
focus is on the substitution area, team bench areas and table
• The CBO wears the same uniform as the on field officials
• The CBO oversees all officials (BM and bench officials)
• The CBO is the main point of contact for coaches and other team
officials

Main responsibilities
• Check the substitution of players
• Check the number of players (max 10) on the field of play
• Check the number of long sticks (max 4) on the field of play
• Assist the on field officials with the off side rule
• Check that no illegal stick exchange occurs
• Check that no illegal actions are carried out by a coach or official
member of either squad
• Check that no foul is committed by a Player or substitute who is in
the act of leaving the field of play or in the act of entering the field
of play, or who is in the bench area, the special substitution area
or the penalty box

Main responsibilities
• Where the CBO becomes aware of any of the before mentioned
infringements, he shall, depending on circumstances, either throw
a flag or blow his whistle or signal “play on” and apply the
appropriate penalty when appropriate
• A CBO can call other penalties, if there is a flagrant act of
misconduct and the on field officials are not able to see it

Additional tasks
• Acknowledge receipt and understanding of the on field officials’
signals relating to penalties, penalty periods or any other matters
• By repeating the signal
• By relaying the decisions to the bench officials
• On request of coaches, advise as to the decision of officials
• Notify each team 30 seconds before the end of a time out
• Notify each team 1 minute before the start of a period
• Notify the nearest officals when a player has 5 personal fouls
• Deal with time out requests:
• Call time out when legal
• Call illegal procedure when not legal
