Introduction Introduction • Not all technical fouls are in this basic course • We picked the ten most important technical fouls • To keep it simple for starting officials • Section 9 ‘Technical Fouls’ of the WL rule book lists all technical fouls • Again, not al rules are discussed in detail, as they were allready discussed in the course ‘Men’s Lacrosse Basic Rules’ Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls
  • 3. Introduction Interference • A player may not interfere in any manner with an opponent • When the ball is more than 3 yards (2.7 m) away • Who is in pursuit of the ball carrier • Exception: legal pick • A player may not guard an opponent so closely as to prevent free movement when the opponent is not in possession of the ball • Exception: loose ball within 3 yards (2.7 m) Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls

Introduction Pushing • A player may not push an opponent with their stick. • The gloved hand is not considerdd part of the stick • A player may push: • An opponent in possession • An opponent within 3 yards (2.7 m) of a losse ball or ball in flight • A player may not push: • Below the hip or above the shoulders • An opponent on the ground or down on one or both knees • A player needs to be disadvantaged by the push for a call Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls

Introduction Illegal pick • No offensive player shall move into and make contact with a defensive player with the purpose of blocking that defensive player from the player they are defending • A pick must be: • Completely stationary • Motionless • In a normal stance • Holding the stick in front of the body, not sticking out Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls

Introduction Holding • A player may not: • Hold an opponents’ body with his own crosse • Use the free hand to gain an advantage while defending • Use the part of the stick in between the gloves to guide or direct a player (cross check without exerting pressure) • A player may: • Hold an opponents’ crosse with his own crosse • If that opponent is the ball carrier • If that opponent is within 3 yards (2.7 m) of a loose ball Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls

Introduction Handling the ball • A player shall not touch the ball with their free hand while it is in play • Exception: the goalkeeper in the crease • The goalkeeper may bat the ball with his hand, not grab • A gloved hand on the stick is considered part of the stick for this rule Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls

Introduction Withholding the ball from play • A player shall not withhold the ball from play in any manner: • Lie on a loose ball on the ground • Trap a ball on the ground with their stick longer than is necessary for them to control the ball and pick it up • While in possession hold the stick so close to the body that the ball can’t come out freely • Grasping the head of the stick while in possession so that the ball can’t come out freely • A ball still inside a loose stick on the ground is withholding • Immediate whistle, award ball to other team Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls

Introduction Illegal procedure • Illegal substitution • Failure to be at least 5 yards away on a restart • Illegal time out request • Crossing restraining line before possession during a face off • Crossing wing line before the whistle during a face off • Moving the stick or hands during the set phase of a face off • Having too many men or longsticks on the field • Delaying the game on purpose • Playing without a stick • Over and back • Many more, listed in rule 61 of the WL rule book Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls
  • 11. Introduction Stalling • Can, and should, be called at any point in the game where it is obvious that a team is not making a reasonable effort to attack their opponents’ goal • Exception: a team that is man down does not have to attack • A team that is inside the attack goal area cannot be guilty of stalling, inside the attack area it is up to the defense to play • Stalling must be called in the same manner troughout the entire game, not just in the final minutes of a tight game Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls
  • 12. Introduction Warding off • A player with the ball may protect his crosse from stick checks with the body, usually the arm and hand • The arm and hand must be relatively stationary • Arm and hand may move as a natural response to a check • A player with the ball may not use the arm and / or hand to direct the movement of the opponents’ stick or body • A player with the ball may not use the arm / or hand to create an advantage of the opponent Men’s Lacrosse Basic Officiating FOULS video Expulsion Fouls Personal Fouls Technical Fouls Execution of Penalties Simultaneous Fouls
