Evolution : Evolution is the change in heritable characteristics of biological populations
over successive generations and relies on the process of natural selection.
About 15 million years ago pimate call driver “Ramapithecus” and
“Dryupithecus” were existing. they walked upright like gorillas and
chimpanzees Ramapithecus was more man like while Dryupithecuswas
more ape like.
Ramapithecus :
• Lived about 15 million years ago.
• Fossils
• A fragile upper jaw was discovered by g Edward Lewis 1930 in
shivalik hills.
• Another fossil was discovered in Lake Victoria Africa by leaky in
1955.
• The fossil indicates that ramapithecus which lived-inAfrica and
Eurasia were the forerunners of humanoids.
Australopithecus afransis:
+ Lived 3 to 4,000,000 years ago
+ The Fossil of a female men ape (called Lucy)was
discovered from Ethiopia in 1973.
+ Cranial capacity – 450cc
+ Height~4feet tall
+ Weight – 50lbs
+ First bipedal primate
+ Walked upright
+ Lived on grassland
+ Spent lots of time on trees
+ Had relatively long arms
+ Smaller canines and incisiors.
+ Homo habiliEs:
+ Lived 1.5 to 2 million years ago
+ Fossils: recovered in Leaky in 1964 from rocks of Olduvai Gorge in
East Africa.
+ Erect gait
+ First time our genus ‘homo’ appeared
+ Males probably had harems as apes do
+ Tooth size decreased
+ Diet changed from largely vegetarian to carnivorous
+ Tool users – used tools out of pebbles and used themto gather a variety
of plant material like nuts, seeds, fruits and roots etc…
+ Cooperative behaviour evolved – started food sharing.
homo EREctus
• Lived 1million years ago
• Fossils
+ Jawamen- Fossil was discovered in Trinil, Java in 1894 by Eugene
Dubiors
• Cranial capicity- 755 to 1000cco
+ Pecking men – Fossil was discovered by Davidson Black in 1920.
• Cranial capacity – 900 to 1200cc
• More Erect gait like ours
• Larger brain than Habilies
• Skeleton similar to us
• Size- 5feet tall
• Weight – 100lbs
• Males and females were of similar sizes
• First hominoid to migrate out of Africa
• Skull as thick and massive
• Large jaws and teeth
• Earliest use of projictile weapons
• First hominoid to use fire
Homo nEandERthalasis
• Lived 1.5 lived years ago
• Fossils Was first underearthed in 1856 in a lime stone caves in the
Neander ravine near Dusseldorf, Germany
• Cave dwellers
• Height – 5 feet
• Powerfully built
• Cranial capacity – 1450cc
• Made complex tools
• Neanderthals buried their dead with various ritual objects
• Used animals hides as clothing
• Had language
• Cared for individuals
Homo sapiens
• Cranial capacity – 1350cc
• Social
•Thank you
