“I was always taken with the evocative colours
of old hard covers”
• He juxtapose old hardback books
• He uses shallow depth of field to soften the background so we are drawn
to the sharp edges of the foreground
• He has thrown focus to eliminate the spines if the books
• He has made the books in the background quite abstract, I have tried to
mimic this by adjusting the contrast and blurring a background layer

• Original
– I chose books with bright colours which would stand out
– I set up the books at different heights and and angles which created
defined lines and edges
• Edited
– In Photoshop I adjusted the brightness, contract and saturation to
change the colours of books and washout the backdrop
– In one of my attempts I tried to blur the background layer to soften it
– I cropped on of my attempts to focus on certain colours

I used a shallow depth of field, a lamp to brighten the picture and an exposure time of 1/50

I adjusted the brightness and exposure on Photoshop to emphasize the the colours
I also adjusted the offset to maintain the black
