Section I: Reading Passage
Reading Passage 1
Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
Chess is called the game of kings. It has been around for a long time. People
have been playing it for over 500 years. Chess is based on an even older game
from India. The chess we play today is from Europe.
Chess is a two-player game. One player uses the white pieces. The other uses
the black pieces. Each piece moves in a special way. One piece is called the
king. Each player has one. The players take turns moving their pieces. If a
player lands on a piece, he or she takes it. The game ends when a player loses
his or her king. There are a few more rules, but those are the basics.
Many people think that chess is more than a game. They think that it makes
the mind stronger. Good chess players use their brains. They take their time.
They think about what will happen next. These skills are useful in life and in
chess. Chess is kind of a work out for the mind.
You don't always have lots of time to think when playing chess. There is a
type of chess with short time limits. It's called blitz chess. In blitz chess, each
player gets ten minutes to use for the whole game. Your clock runs during
your turn. You hit the time clock after your move. This stops your clock. It
also starts the other player's clock. If you run out of time, you lose. Games of
blitz chess are fast-paced.

Reading Passage 2
Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
When one hears the term “reality” applied to a television show, one might
expect that the events occurred naturally or, at the least, were not scripted, but
this is not always the case. Many reality shows occur in unreal environments,
like rented mansions occupied by film crews. These living environments do
not reflect what most people understand to be “reality.” Worse, there have
been accusations that events not captured on film were later restaged by
producers. Worse still, some involved in the production of “reality” television
claim that the participants were urged to act out story lines premeditated by
producers. With such accusations floating around, it’s no wonder many
people take reality TV to be about as real as the sitcom.
____ 10. What is the best summary of the above passage?
a. Reality TV shows are not very realistic because they are filmed in
unrealistic places, may contain restaged events, and may be scripted.
b. These living environments reflect what most people understand to be
“reality.”
c. TV shows or programs are only made for amusement.
d. Some people use ftp believe of what is being presented on the TV, so they
act according to those shows.

Reading Passage 3
Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
Save the Whales
Save the whales!” That’s what the bumper sticker on the Smiths’ car
read. It was an abstract idea, of course. Jake liked having the sticker make a
statement. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one
right in his own neighborhood. It was a Saturday morning when the
newspaper first reported the whale sightings. A pod of the mammals were
swimming close to shore. Everyone around the beach town rushed out to the
shore to see them. They were expecting beautiful show, better than a movie,
but nothing they’d have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam toward them, right at the shoreline. It came in with the
waves, and when the waves receded, it stayed. Its massive body rested on the
sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer
sightseers. They had to become rescuers. A few people ran toward the animal.
They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no
use. An animal rescue squad soon arrived in a truck with cranes and huge
stretchers to help move the huge animal.
Jake and his family couldn’t do much on the beach, so they went back their
house and made sandwiches and hot tea to bring to the rescuers. At least, Jake
thought, they could help in some way. Back at the beach, they offered the
food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting
dark. Some people lined up their cars to keep the headlights shining on the
beach. The rescuers would not give up. As the tide came in, they heaved the
whale into the surf. They cheered when it headed out to sea. It swam out about
a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked
like a leap of joy, it rose in an arc over the water—a sight that was their
reward for helping.

Reading Passage 4
Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
Have you ever heard the sound of a hummingbird? They make a buzzing
noise when they fly. They make this noise because they beat their wings so
fast. They beat their wings up to 80 times a second. All that flapping makes a
lot of noise. That's why we call them hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds fly in a unique way. They move their wings so fast that they
can hover. This means that they can stay in one spot in the middle of the air,
like a helicopter. Sometimes they fly or hover upside down. They are the only
bird that flies backward.
Hummingbirds are small. One type called the bee hummingbird is the smallest
bird in the world. Bee hummingbirds weigh less than a penny. They are just a
little bit bigger than bees. I guess that's where they get their name.
Bee hummingbirds build tiny nests. They use cobwebs and bits of bark to
make their homes. Their homes are only an inch around. This is big enough
for their eggs though. Their eggs are smaller than peas. People have found
these tiny nests on a clothespin.
Hummingbirds move fast. It takes lots of energy to move as fast as they do.
This means that they need to eat a lot of food. Their favorite food is nectar, a
sweet liquid inside of some flowers. They drink more than their own weight in
nectar daily. They have to visit hundreds of flowers to get enough nectar to
live. They can only store enough energy to survive through the night. They
live on the edge. Hummingbirds don't use their long beaks like straws. They
have a tongue just like you. They use their tongues for eating. They flick their
tongues in and out of their mouths while inside of flowers. They lap up nectar.
Flowers give them the energy that they need.
8. English Department Revision Worksheet - Grade 5 Page 8
Hummingbirds help flowers too. They get pollen on their heads and bills
when they feed. Flowers use pollen to make seeds. Hummingbirds help pollen
get from one flower to the next. This helps flowers make more seeds. More
seeds means more flowers. More flowers means more food for hummingbirds.
Isn't it nice how that works out?
