Learn about the Common Prep and Purity philosophy behind building a master schedule for classes and common cohorts. Participants will review a successful
model of appropriate sequencing to decrease conflicts in student schedules, while creating optimal pathways of study. This model applies to large high schools
with multiple academies, medium-size schools with a few academies and small, single-academy schools.

NAF Certification Standard 2: PERSONALIZED ENVIRONMENT
A personalized environment is created in the Academy Strategic Actions
1.2. a. Academy students are scheduled as a group into NAF theme courses
as well as in two or more core academic courses such as language arts, math,
science, or social studies.
1.2. b. A 3- to 4-year academy serves as the organizational structure in a four-
year high school program of study. By design, it links core courses with
technical content at each grade level, with a minimum of four NAF courses (or
their equivalent) which are sequenced and coordinated.
1.2 c. There is a weekly common planning time or other formal collaboration
time for the academy team of more than three staff members, so that
integrated learning, student supports and individualized student assessment
can occur across disciplines and grade levels.
1.2. d. All academy students receive career-themed guidance on college
exploration and college choices based on their individual interests.

Establishing Priorities
in Building the Master Schedule
•IDENTIFYING # OF SECTIONS
•CREATING BALANCE
•WHAT GETS LOADED FIRST
GOAL IS TO BUILD A PERFECT SCHEDULE SO THAT EACH & EVERY
STUDENT HAS THE GREATEST OPPORTUNITY TO MEET THE GRADUATE
OUTCOMES & TAKE EVERY CLASS IN THE IDENTIFIED SEQUENCE
(EQUITY & ACCESS)

Steps Towards Building a Master
Schedule
•Establish course sequence
•Schedule students accurately
•Keep courses pure by course numbers
•Determine # of sections for each
course
•Work as a team to determine
constraints within the Pathway.
•Build the biggest Pathway first
•Place singletons/constrains for the
Pathway first and continue building

Schedule Students Accurately
• It is crucial to building a good master schedule to
have students placed accurately
• Assure that students in the Academies are in the
correct academy courses
• Follow the established coursed sequence
• Reduce and Prescribe
• Check and make sure that number are adding up
correctly.

Let’s Build a Master Schedule
•Divide into groups of 6
•You will be given
sections for a Pathway
•Work as a team to build
your master schedule
