5. Architecture
Vigan is considered the “Intramuros of the
North”. It is one of the best-preserved
examples of a planned Spanish colonial town
in Asia. It retains the Spanish colonial
architecture along its narrow and cobble-
stoned streets known as Calle Crisologo.

6. Calle Crisologo
Calle Crisologo, also known as
Mena Crisologo street, is a
notable tourist attraction in the
heritage city of Vigan. These old
Spanish-type houses have
huge, high-pitched roofs, large
and rectangular living rooms
that are made of adobe, bricks,
lime terracotta, hardwood floors,
and windows of Capiz shells
framed in wooden window
panels.

7. TEXTILE
Inabel is a hand-weaving
technique of the Ilocanos that
was produced using traditional
wooden looms. The different
designs represent different
meanings: the dizzying
“binakol” weave represents the
waves of the sea. They believed
that this design protects them
from bad spirits.

The inabel designs are inspired
by natural elements: patterns
that depict different landforms,
the colors of flowers and
vegetation, plaid, zigzags,
animal patterns, and the ocean
waves.

9. BURNAY
Burnay is an ungiazed earthen jar
with small opening.
The burnay industry (pottery making
industry) in Vigan is also a popular
cottage industry. It is believed that
time natives already practiced pottery
even before the Spanish colonizers
arrived in the Philippines.
It is used for the storage of water and
rice grains and as container for salts,
brown sugar, basi (local wine), and
bagoong.

10. PANGASINAN
The name Pangasinan means “land of salt” or
“place of salt-making”. It is derived from asin, the
word for “salt” in the Pangasinan language.
An ancient kingdom called Luyag na Kaboloan
once existed in Pangasinan. Princess Urduja, a
legendary woman warrior, is believed to have
ruled in Pangasinan around the 4th century.
Pangasinan was probably connected to the
maritime trade network that once flourished in
ancient Southeast Asia.
11. Weaving is one of the arts and crafts of
Pangasinan including the smoothly
woven Bolinao mats made from buri or
Raffa leaves and the bamboo crafts
(baskets, furniture) of San Carlos.

14. KALINGA
The native of Kalinga is skilled weavers. One of their finest
products is their textiles, which is characterized by red stripes
and white, yellow, and black geometrical pattern.

Kain is a wrapped-around skirt
or tapis that southern Kalinga
women wear. It is a worm below
the abdomen, and when they
walk, one of the thighs is
exposed.

17. KAIN
The colors they used in their
textiles have cultural woman’s
meaning: red signifies bravery,
black is for the soil or land;
white is for the flowers of the
coffee trees; yellow for the sand;
and green for the mountains.

18. BASKETRY
The basketry of Kalinga shows its
fine craftsmanship. The labba is a
bowl-shaped basket made from
rattan, with sizes that vary from 20
to 150 cm in diameter.

19. TATTOOING
Tattooing is another form of art of
Kalinga. Because it usually covers
the chest and the arm, it may be
considered as clothing and
decoration.

20. WANG-OD
Whang-Od is the lasr “mambabatok” or
traditional Kalinga tattoo artist. She uses
a mixture of charcoal and water that is
tapped onto the skin through a torn end.
The painful tattoo technique is said to be
a thousand years old and can only be
passed through lineage. It is believed
that if someone outside of the bloodline
does the tattoo, it will get infected. In
order to preserve the art form; she is
now training some of her relatives to
follow her work.

21. IFUGAO
Ifugaos who live in the mountainous part of the Central
Cordillera in Northern Luzon is excellent weaver, potters, and
skillful craftsmen. They are well-known for carving the
mountain slopes of the world-famous Banaue rice terraces.
The term Ifugao means “native of the Cordillera”.
Banaue shows dynamic lines which signify movements,
cheerfulness, and continuity.
22. BAL’UL
The Bul’ul is a wooden that represent
the rice granary spirits.
This Bul’ul is important to them because
of their belief that they can have an
abundant harvest.
Bul’ul usually made of narra, which
signifies wealth, happiness, and well-
being to the Ifugao

Another important
woodcarving is the Hagibi.
This is a piece of wood which
unique because it is carved to
become a bench.
This Hagibi is a sign of
riches.

25. MOUNTAIN PROVINCE
Mountain Province was formerly referred to as Mountain in
some foreign references. The name usually shortened by
locals by Mt. Province.
The province is known for its mummy caves, which contain
naturally mummified bodies, and for its hanging coffins.
26. KABAYAN MUMMY
Close examination of the mummies
reveal that they have body tattoos,
which is a form of art practiced in
most cultural communities.
The body tattoos that adorn the
Kabayan mummies are similar to
patterns found in their textiles as
shown in the picture.
27. TEXTILE

elder.
2. Wanes – men’s traditional attire.
3. Lufid – a short and narrow wrap-around skirt
used by women.
4. Ginaspalawanes – a type of belt that uses by
married women of Bontok and Kankanay in the
northern cordillera.
5. Ikat – a dyeing technique used to pattern textile
that employs resist dyeing on the yarn prior to
dyeing and weaving the fabrics.

Design an example of a traditional and modern tattoo. Create a design
for a hand tattoo. Also use elements and principles of the art and other
symbol in your surrounding as inspiration for your tattoo design.

Procedure:
1. Trace your hand and arm onto a piece of paper.
2. Cut the traced line of your hand and arm using a pair of scissor.
3. Draw your own design on the arm. Leave the hands and fingers blank. You
can use primary and secondary colors.
