1. SURVEY ANALYSIS.
The Group includes; Honor
Cooke, Rhianna Griffin and Elliot Hunter.
2. This question was to ascertain the gender of an average horror
viewer, however it isn’t certain if this is representative of an average viewer or
the personal preferences on the gender of people who could be bothered to
reply…However according to original opinion, Female is the most prolific
viewer. We should attempt to orient features and stereotypes as well as humour
towards the average mind-set of stereotypes and sense of humour of a female.
3. It seems the most likely age range of response and from this the most likely horror
viewer from the results is yr11-sixth form(15-19) This could mean we need to
explore more graphic or mature conventions of horror to satisfy the audience,
however there will be a minor young audience so we should also account for that
fact.
4. Of the people who responded with a definite answer, supernatural and gore were
the most popular of the sub-genres, this is convenient as we had already planned to
use these in a psychological horror.
5. From the survey of people who had decided, gothic horror was the least popular sub-
genre, this means any romance planned in the film will be downplayed to concentrate
on horror and distance it from this genre. However Gore was also quite unpopular so
making gore a focus is not advisable, gore will be a factor but the gratuity will not cloy
amongst the gore lovers in the audience.
6. The most popular age rating was “18”. This means we should be able to explore more
graphic or mature themes in the horror, however the other age ranges are also quite
popular so we should keep horror conventions that would appeal to the other age
ranges also.
7. This matches the general consensus of what we are using to create the horror in the
film, however there seems to be a noticeable emphasis on tension being the scariest
convention of horror so we should emphasise tension throughout the film to appeal to
the response from the survey. We will also add a greater emphasis on the blood and
gore in the film as this was basically non-existent in the former script.
8. This fact surprised to some extent, as we were going to use camera angles to infer as to the
fates of the characters for a thrill. However it seems that the audience expresses little
empathy for the characters shown as it was voted the least frightening horror convention.
Blood and gore was also a close second, being voted second as most and least
frightening, this may lead to only one scene featuring the theme or a single extreme
depiction of blood and gore. It is also important to note that only 1% of the responses
voted tension as the least frightening, showing clearly that tension is a convention well
received as scary. This should play a major role in our film.
9. This indicates that most viewers have no qualms about gender representation in the
lead cast with both also shown as preferable so nothing will change most likely in terms
of characters.
10. This proves a rather shocking fact about general gender stereotyping in film as it is a
near unanimous decision they would believe a male to be the most likely killer, this is
quite a convenient fact to play on for two reasons. Firstly, it makes it easier for any type
of male character to be a believable killer with brief displays of psychotic tendencies.
And secondly it gives quite a clear twist that could shock the audience, the idea of a
female killer seems very surprising towards our target audience.
11. This proves that sometimes the cliché horror conventions are the best, with a knife
being voted the most likely murder weapon, as well as butcher knife being listed several
times in the other section. However, this could mean we should use a different murder
weapon in order for the film to be less predictable.
