2. DEFINITION :
Stroke is defined as an acute, focal or global neurological
deficit which is vascular in origin, non-traumatic, non-
epileptic, persisting for more than 24 hours or is interrupted
by death within 24 hours.
4. • Several terms have been used to classify stroke according to
duration and evolution of symptoms:
1.Transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
2.Stroke
3.Progressing stroke (stroke in evolution)
4.Completed stroke
7. ISCHAEMIC PENUMBRA
Radiologically, a cerebral
infarct can be seen as a
lesion that comprises a
mixture of dead brain tissue
that is already undergoing
autolysis, and tissue that is
ischaemic and swollen but
recoverable –is known as
ischaemic penumbra
8. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF STROKE
HAEMORRHAGIC STROKE
It usually results from rupture of
a blood vessel within the brain
parenchyma. Explosive entry of
blood into the brain
parenchyma causes immediate
cessation of function in that
area as neurons are disrupted
and white matter fibre tracts are
split apart
