3. Economic Importance
• Pakistan has rich and vast natural resources, covering various ecological and climatic
zones; therefore the country has great potential for producing all types of food
commodities.
• Agriculture has an important direct and indirect role in generating economic growth.
• The importance of agriculture to the economy is seen in three ways:
1. first, it provides food to consumers and fibers for textile industry;
2. second, it is a source of foreign exchange earnings;
3. & third, it provides a market for industrial goods.
4. Economic Importance
• The agriculture of Pakistan is heavily based on major crops which
account for 4.67 percent of GDP.
• Other crops account for 2.25 percent of GDP.
• Livestock Contributes 11.61 percent to GDP.
• Forestry contributes 0.41 percent to GDP.
• Fishing contributes 0.43 percent to GDP.
5. Major & Minor Crops
• Major crops contribute in agriculture value addition, GDP of the
country and grown widely, while Minor crops refer to crops that may
be high in value but that are not widely grown.
• In Pakistan, Major Crops Account for more than 23.55 % of the
agriculture value Addition.
• Minor Crops Share about 11.3 % to Agriculture Value Addition.
6. Crop Seasons
Pakistan has two major crop seasons:
• "Kharif" starts from March-July and is ends during October-
December.
• "Rabi", the second sowing season, begins as on October-December
and is harvested in March-May.
