  2. 2. First Battle of Bull Run July 1861 <ul><li>Who remembers why the Union soldiers headed to Manassas, Virginia? </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Union leaders wanted a victory so they moved towards Manassas (Bull Run) to attack the Confederates. </li></ul><ul><li>This was risky because the Union troops were not fully trained. </li></ul><ul><li>VIDEO </li></ul>

  6. 6. <ul><li>While Confederates were attacking the Union soldiers they let out a high pitched scream which later became known as the rebel yell. </li></ul>

  12. 12. Day 1 <ul><li>Union soldiers fight the Confederates to the north and west of Gettysburg. They end up going through town and the Union soldiers line up at Cemetery Hill. </li></ul>

Day 2 <ul><li>More Union soldiers arrive in Gettysburg. </li></ul><ul><li>The Union General Meade decided to defend the hills rather than attack. </li></ul><ul><li>Union General Gouverneur Warren saw that there were no soldiers on the Round Top hills. </li></ul><ul><li>The army that put cannons on the hills could easily fire on the entire battlefield. </li></ul>

  16. 16. Day 2 Continued <ul><li>Confederate soldiers reached the top of Cemetery Hill. It looked as if they were going to win the battle. </li></ul><ul><li>Union troops fought back and pushed the Confederates down the hill. </li></ul><ul><li>The fighting stopped at around midnight. </li></ul>

Day 3 Pickett’s Charge <ul><li>At about 12:50 in the afternoon Confederate cannons began firing at the center of the Union soldiers. </li></ul><ul><li>About 13,000 Confederate soldiers prepared to attack. General George Pickett ordered them to walk quickly and keep close together. </li></ul><ul><li>Union soldiers began firing cannons when the Confederates slowed down to climb over a fence. </li></ul>

  19. 19. Day 3 Continued <ul><li>By 4 in the afternoon Pickett’s charge was finished. </li></ul><ul><li>There were more than 6,000 Confederate casualties on day 3. </li></ul><ul><li>The Confederates lost the Battle of Gettysburg. </li></ul>
  20. 20. <ul><li>The Civil War ended on April 9 th , 1865 when Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. </li></ul>
  21. 21. <ul><li>Many southerners were angry that the Confederacy had lost the Civil War. </li></ul><ul><li>After the surrender Lincoln gave a speech that said that certain blacks would gain the right to vote. </li></ul><ul><li>A man named John Wilkes Booth began planning Lincoln’s assassination. </li></ul>
  22. 22. Lincoln’s Assassination <ul><li>John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln on April 14 th , 1865 at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. </li></ul><ul><li>He shot Lincoln then jumped from the balcony to the stage below. </li></ul>
  23. 24. <ul><li>Lincoln was carried across the street to a home where he was seen by a doctor but there was nothing that could be done. </li></ul><ul><li>Lincoln died the next morning. </li></ul><ul><li>Booth was found and killed on April 26 th , 1865. </li></ul>
