Growth and Fixed Mindsets
According to Dweck (2007), human beings can depict negative
emotions such as frustrations, anger, boredom, apathy and other
related responses due to an intense workload, failure in exams,
loss of employment and other issues. More so, human thoughts
or interpretation of specific events could change how they
experience them (Dweck, 36). Back then, my family had moved
to a new state where my father had received a new post. Three
days after settling in the new state, I enrolled in Grade 5 in a
school where big-bodied students participated more in
Mathematical sessions than their counterparts like me. In my
previous school, I was often scoring an A in this subject.
On this very day, my new Mathematics teacher asked a
mathematical question that defeated the entire class, including
the perceived mathematicians. Out of fear, I attempted the
question and got the wrong answer. Most of the big-bodied boys
and girls laughed at me mockingly, asserting that a small-
bodied thing like me would not get the answer right if people
with adequate flesh had failed. In Dweck’s view, a negative
attitude can frustrate one’s effort to concentrate on the former
favorite activity, thus shifting attention to easy tasks.
Consequently, I failed my first test by scoring an F. My father
reacted furiously by isolating me every time he bought gifts for
my siblings. In response, I promised myself to overcome this
prevailing belief that small-bodied students cannot perform in
Mathematics. I spend more time with my elder brother and this
friendly mathematics teacher to prove everyone wrong. When
we sat for the last exam that term, I shocked everyone
promoting that belief by scoring an A in Mathematics. My
parents, teachers and other stakeholders gifted and encouraged
me to continue with the same trend. Indeed, I never
disappointed them; thus, my current managerial position in a
reputable company.
An analysis of the above narrative in the scope of Carol
Dweck’s growth and fixed mindsets theory could help explain
how we respond emotionally depending on our mindsets.
According to Dweck (2007), both the “subconscious and
conscious perceptions can affect one’s desires and attempts to
access them” (19). More so, most people's thoughts and
personality awareness originate from mindset, thus facilitating
or obstructing achievements. There are two types of mindsets in
psychology: “fixed and growth mindsets” (Dweck, 8). Having a
fixed mindset creates a feeling of not being good enough to
achieve a certain objective. This situation can deter one from
performing the perceived difficult tasks, thus prioritizing the
easier ones. On the other hand, the growth mindset (often
associate with adults) is a belief that practice and perseverance
can help overcome challenges and attract good outcomes
(Dweck, 17). Indeed, this type of belief can orchestrate the
feeling of managing behavior and emotions and optimizing
certain areas of interest. Besides, a negative mindset can inhibit
one's ability to perform well in challenging activity or prefer
easy tasks. Children could perceive that performing a specific
activity is a dormant state which is uncontrollable.
Although I was a child, I managed to read through my father’s
anger after learning that performing poorly in Mathematics
orchestrated his cold reception. This frustration motivated me to
identify my newly acquired fixed mindset that being small-
bodied associates with easier tasks while having a big body
results in optimized performance in strenuous activities. I,
therefore, worked hard and defied this belief to bring a
permanent solution. Thus, if the same experience emerged
today, I would still adopt the growth mindset to overcome the
challenges and attain my goals.

Information Systems Report Topics
1. A midsized telemarketing company has asked you, a
management information systems consultant, to submit a
proposal to help it develop a comprehensive electronic
communications policy for its employees. That is, the policy
should govern voice mail, e-mail, Internet access, social media,
messaging, and files and data that are created, uploaded,
downloaded, sent, received, or stored. In the introduction of
your report, explain why a comprehensive, detailed policy is
extremely important. Develop a proposal, identify the objectives
and components of the comprehensive electronics
communications policy, and submit a budget for your consulting
company to help Company X develop this policy.
2. Although many of the salespeople in your company use
laptops and smartphones, they've asked the company to buy
them tablets. Salespeople contend that the portability of these
tablets, in addition to their ability to deliver product
demonstrations, and compile and present sales presentations to
clients, makes them a necessity for increasing sales and
remaining competitive. After you investigate the benefits of
tablets, you decide to compare the top three or four tablets
using the following criteria: price, operating system, app
quality, screen size, and storage. Which tablet would be best for
your salespeople?
3. You work for a small business owner. He wants to know
whether the company should lease or buy the technology it
needs. This technology includes computers, all-in-one printers,
multimedia devices (such as LCD projectors), and smartphones.
What should the decision criteria be? What are the advantages
and disadvantages of each option? Make recommendations to
the owner.
4. Should First National Bank consider contracting out one of
its operations offshore, such as call center or tech support? As a
consultant, the bank’s Chief Financial Officer has asked you to
research the pros and cons of outsourcing and offshoring and
present your findings in a report.
5. Many students like you are contemplating systems'
certification beyond the undergraduate degree. What are the
most popular and useful certification programs available? Is
certification worth the effort and money? What programs would
you recommend? Why?
6. The computer lab manager in your business school asked you
to write a report that assesses the pros and cons of upgrading
now to the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating
system. Besides the costs, she wants you to examine
compatibility issues, usability, time it will take the lab’s staff to
learn the new operating system, tech support, length of time
Microsoft will support the lab’s current version, and anything
else you think is relevant. She wants your recommendation
about this matter.
7. A popular trend in today's workplace is telecommuting. Your
boss has had several employees ask her about the possibility of
performing work–at least part time–at home. Your boss isn't
convinced that telecommuting is in her best interest, so she asks
you to write a report that analyzes the pros and cons of this
form of employment. Consider what jobs are ideal for
telecommuting, what statistics reveal about telecommuting and
how it impacts employee productivity, how employers monitor
telecommuting, and how telecommuting affects businesses and
its employees.
8. Your employer has a Web presence. Now, the company is
considering whether going “paperless” is the next logical step.
In other words, how would a company-wide intranet solve this
problem? Find examples of companies that have gone
“paperless” to use as examples in your report to the company’s
president. What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a
system? How would employees respond to communicating only
electronically? Is security a problem? Offer recommendations.
9. Many students majoring in management information systems
(MIS) wonder whether basic writing skills will be an important
aspect of their jobs. The department head of your program is
curious, too, and has asked you to write a report that
investigates the key skills needed for MIS jobs. In addition, she
wants to know whether the course requirements in your business
school adequately prepare MIS majors for the kinds of on-the-
job writing they will do. After you've researched and analyzed
these issues, offer recommendations in a report to the
department head
10. You are thrilled to secure an entry-level executive position,
and are eager to start. You ask and learn that your company
does not have an employee e-mail policy. You must figure out
what to do and not to do. You ask your new colleagues about
this, and their answers are surprising. Some say your employer
can monitor whatever you access on the company’s computer
system, even if it is your personal e-mail account. Others
indicate that employees have been terminated for excessive
personal use of the Internet at work. A few believe that the IT
employees can look at anything, anytime they want to, for any
reason they want to, because they are agents of the employer,
and it’s the employer’s system. You have one specific question.
On occasion, you have more work to do, but it’s time to go
home–and accessing your employer’s email remotely is a hassle.
You wonder if you can forward your files from your work e-
mail account to your personal account and finish your work at
home. Is that a problem, you ask? A co-worker who was
previously employed in IT says this could create the impression
that you are trying to steal the company’s confidential
information. You decide to research appropriate e-mail conduct
in the workplace and to seek out any laws or legal cases relating
to this topic. Construct a report of your findings, then make a
list of recommendations for a potential company-wide e-mail
policy that you can share with your supervisor.
11. The president of the mid-sized organization where you are
the human resources manager has heard that several of your
competitors have installed software to monitor the computer use
of its employees. The president asks you to determine whether
your organization should do likewise. What would be the
advantages and disadvantages to installing computer-monitoring
software? What are the costs? Based on your investigation, what
conclusions can you draw? Make recommendations to the
president. Use your imagination to fill in details about your
organization.

Another mindset that affects young adults’ possibility for
success is doubt. Doubt plays a major part in the things you do.
Doubt is caused by a feeling of uncertainty. Surprisingly, I
believe doubt is in all of us just some a little bit more than
others. If you feel like you cant do something, chances are you
won't do it. For example, If you feel like you can never learn to
do make up, you probably will no't give it your all. Makeup is
not something you can learn overnight. Me myself thought I
could not do it. I was watching tutorials all about how to do it
and still was confused. At the same time it was already in my
head i couldn't do it so that doubt was holding me back from
giving it my all. I brought all the expensive make-up and gave it
a try. It came out horrible. I felt like I just couldn't get it and
was not sure what I was doing wrong. I was telling my friends
how I could not learn and how I'd just rather pay. Then i had a
photoshoot coming up and was low on cash. When I found
myself backed into a corner I forgot all about the doubt. I
watched a video and did my make up along with the girl in the
video. Even though we were not the same shade I still did as she
said. When it was finished, you would have thought I got it
done professionally. I felt so proud of myself. I didn't have
time for doubt at that time because I had no other choice. If i
would have kept going with the doubt i do not think i would
have actually kept trying. Doubt is like a fear that holds you
back. No like the fear of taking off on a plane but more as a fear
of your ability to do something. In the article, Dweck stated that
“in fixed mind-sets, students care first and foremost about how
they’ll be judged” and that is the same with doubt. If you doubt
you can do something it is more likely that you are doubting the
results due to what others will feel about the outcome. If only
you are doing something, I believe you will be ok with the
outcome compared to if others see what you have done and
judge you by it. Me doing my own makeup was ok but i did not
feel it was good enough to be seen, basically not good enough
for the judgement of others.

  • 1. Surname 3 Student Name Dr. Hildenbrand Course ENGL 1101 Date Growth and Fixed Mindsets According to Dweck (2007), human beings can depict negative emotions such as frustrations, anger, boredom, apathy and other related responses due to an intense workload, failure in exams, loss of employment and other issues. More so, human thoughts or interpretation of specific events could change how they experience them (Dweck, 36). Back then, my family had moved to a new state where my father had received a new post. Three days after settling in the new state, I enrolled in Grade 5 in a school where big-bodied students participated more in Mathematical sessions than their counterparts like me. In my previous school, I was often scoring an A in this subject. On this very day, my new Mathematics teacher asked a mathematical question that defeated the entire class, including the perceived mathematicians. Out of fear, I attempted the question and got the wrong answer. Most of the big-bodied boys and girls laughed at me mockingly, asserting that a small- bodied thing like me would not get the answer right if people with adequate flesh had failed. In Dweck’s view, a negative attitude can frustrate one’s effort to concentrate on the former favorite activity, thus shifting attention to easy tasks. Consequently, I failed my first test by scoring an F. My father reacted furiously by isolating me every time he bought gifts for my siblings. In response, I promised myself to overcome this prevailing belief that small-bodied students cannot perform in Mathematics. I spend more time with my elder brother and this friendly mathematics teacher to prove everyone wrong. When we sat for the last exam that term, I shocked everyone promoting that belief by scoring an A in Mathematics. My
  • 2. parents, teachers and other stakeholders gifted and encouraged me to continue with the same trend. Indeed, I never disappointed them; thus, my current managerial position in a reputable company. An analysis of the above narrative in the scope of Carol Dweck’s growth and fixed mindsets theory could help explain how we respond emotionally depending on our mindsets. According to Dweck (2007), both the “subconscious and conscious perceptions can affect one’s desires and attempts to access them” (19). More so, most people's thoughts and personality awareness originate from mindset, thus facilitating or obstructing achievements. There are two types of mindsets in psychology: “fixed and growth mindsets” (Dweck, 8). Having a fixed mindset creates a feeling of not being good enough to achieve a certain objective. This situation can deter one from performing the perceived difficult tasks, thus prioritizing the easier ones. On the other hand, the growth mindset (often associate with adults) is a belief that practice and perseverance can help overcome challenges and attract good outcomes (Dweck, 17). Indeed, this type of belief can orchestrate the feeling of managing behavior and emotions and optimizing certain areas of interest. Besides, a negative mindset can inhibit one's ability to perform well in challenging activity or prefer easy tasks. Children could perceive that performing a specific activity is a dormant state which is uncontrollable. Although I was a child, I managed to read through my father’s anger after learning that performing poorly in Mathematics orchestrated his cold reception. This frustration motivated me to identify my newly acquired fixed mindset that being small- bodied associates with easier tasks while having a big body results in optimized performance in strenuous activities. I, therefore, worked hard and defied this belief to bring a permanent solution. Thus, if the same experience emerged today, I would still adopt the growth mindset to overcome the challenges and attain my goals.

That is, the policy
  • 4. should govern voice mail, e-mail, Internet access, social media, messaging, and files and data that are created, uploaded, downloaded, sent, received, or stored. In the introduction of your report, explain why a comprehensive, detailed policy is extremely important. Develop a proposal, identify the objectives and components of the comprehensive electronics communications policy, and submit a budget for your consulting company to help Company X develop this policy. 2. Although many of the salespeople in your company use laptops and smartphones, they've asked the company to buy them tablets. Salespeople contend that the portability of these tablets, in addition to their ability to deliver product demonstrations, and compile and present sales presentations to clients, makes them a necessity for increasing sales and remaining competitive. After you investigate the benefits of tablets, you decide to compare the top three or four tablets using the following criteria: price, operating system, app quality, screen size, and storage. Which tablet would be best for your salespeople? 3. You work for a small business owner. He wants to know whether the company should lease or buy the technology it needs. This technology includes computers, all-in-one printers, multimedia devices (such as LCD projectors), and smartphones. What should the decision criteria be? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option? Make recommendations to the owner. 4. Should First National Bank consider contracting out one of its operations offshore, such as call center or tech support? As a consultant, the bank’s Chief Financial Officer has asked you to research the pros and cons of outsourcing and offshoring and present your findings in a report. 5. What programs would you recommend? Why? 6. The computer lab manager in your business school asked you to write a report that assesses the pros and cons of upgrading now to the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Besides the costs, she wants you to examine compatibility issues, usability, time it will take the lab’s staff to learn the new operating system, tech support, length of time Microsoft will support the lab’s current version, and anything else you think is relevant. She wants your recommendation about this matter. 7. A popular trend in today's workplace is telecommuting. Your boss has had several employees ask her about the possibility of performing work–at least part time–at home. Your boss isn't convinced that telecommuting is in her best interest, so she asks you to write a report that analyzes the pros and cons of this form of employment. Consider what jobs are ideal for telecommuting, what statistics reveal about telecommuting and how it impacts employee productivity, how employers monitor telecommuting, and how telecommuting affects businesses and its employees. 8. Your employer has a Web presence. Now, the company is considering whether going “paperless” is the next logical step. In other words, how would a company-wide intranet solve this problem? Find examples of companies that have gone “paperless” to use as examples in your report to the company’s president. What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a system? How would employees respond to communicating only electronically? Is security a problem? Offer recommendations. 9. Many students majoring in management information systems

The department head of your program is curious, too, and has asked you to write a report that investigates the key skills needed for MIS jobs. In addition, she wants to know whether the course requirements in your business school adequately prepare MIS majors for the kinds of on-the- job writing they will do. After you've researched and analyzed these issues, offer recommendations in a report to the department head 10. You are thrilled to secure an entry-level executive position, and are eager to start. You ask and learn that your company does not have an employee e-mail policy. You must figure out what to do and not to do. You ask your new colleagues about this, and their answers are surprising. Some say your employer can monitor whatever you access on the company’s computer system, even if it is your personal e-mail account. Others indicate that employees have been terminated for excessive personal use of the Internet at work. A few believe that the IT employees can look at anything, anytime they want to, for any reason they want to, because they are agents of the employer, and it’s the employer’s system. You have one specific question. On occasion, you have more work to do, but it’s time to go home–and accessing your employer’s email remotely is a hassle. You wonder if you can forward your files from your work e- mail account to your personal account and finish your work at home. Is that a problem, you ask? A co-worker who was previously employed in IT says this could create the impression that you are trying to steal the company’s confidential information. You decide to research appropriate e-mail conduct in the workplace and to seek out any laws or legal cases relating to this topic. Construct a report of your findings, then make a list of recommendations for a potential company-wide e-mail policy that you can share with your supervisor. 11. What would be the advantages and disadvantages to installing computer-monitoring software? What are the costs? Based on your investigation, what conclusions can you draw? I brought all the expensive make-up and gave it a try. It came out horrible. I felt like I just couldn't get it and was not sure what I was doing wrong. I was telling my friends how I could not learn and how I'd just rather pay. Then i had a photoshoot coming up and was low on cash. When I found myself backed into a corner I forgot all about the doubt. I watched a video and did my make up along with the girl in the video. Even though we were not the same shade I still did as she said. When it was finished, you would have thought I got it done professionally. I felt so proud of myself. I didn't have time for doubt at that time because I had no other choice. If i would have kept going with the doubt i do not think i would have actually kept trying. Doubt is like a fear that holds you back. No like the fear of taking off on a plane but more as a fear of your ability to do something. In the article, Dweck stated that “in fixed mind-sets, students care first and foremost about how they’ll be judged” and that is the same with doubt. If you doubt you can do something it is more likely that you are doubting the results due to what others will feel about the outcome. If only you are doing something, I believe you will be ok with the outcome compared to if others see what you have done and judge you by it. Me doing my own makeup was ok but i did not feel it was good enough to be seen, basically not good enough for the judgement of others. Side Panel Expand side
