4. Concept
• I listened to the lyrics of “Hey There Delilah” by The Plain White T’s and thought that the
meaning of the song could be twisted to have sinister undertones and decided to put a
spin on the song and have a stalker/obsessive theme. Lyrics such as “I'd walk to you if I
had no other way” “Don't you worry about the distance // I'm right there if you get
lonely” “Delilah, I can promise you // That by the time we get through //
The world will never ever be the same // And you’re to blame” can be from the POV of
someone who is obsessed with Delilah and delusional in thinking they will be together.
An article on Wikipedia actually states that the song was written by Tom Higgenson
about Delilah DiCrescenzo after first meeting her. She originally rejected his advances
because she was already in a relationship and said this about the song – "When I'm at
the gym, it's playing; when I'm at the pool, it's playing. Part of me wants to scream at the
top of my lungs that it's about me. Another part of me wants to cower and say it's not.
[...] It was so beautifully written. There was pressure to live up to this ideal. I didn't know
how to be polite but, you know, ditch him.”
• I want the video to be a comment on the sexualisation of women and young girls so I will
have the Delilah character dress in all white and have a very angelic aura to represent the
expectation that women should be virginal and pure which is why the stalker is so
attracted to her because she appears to be the only girl like this. However when he
learns that she isn’t this perfect image he has of her, he will snap and the video will end
with him appearing in her house. The stalker will be a faceless character to show how
men are often not held accountable for their sexist actions however his face will be
shown at the end of the video when the Delilah character finally notices him – after the
extreme action of breaking into her home. He finally feels seen by her.
