A Journey of Man
2
And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His
mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and
his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until,
when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says,
"My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have
bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of
which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I
have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims[46:15]
Verily, Allah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in
the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily,
Allah is AllKnower, AllAware (of things).[ 31:34]
Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "The lifespan for my
Ummah is from sixty years to seventy [years].
Allah is He Who created you in (a state of) weakness,
then gave you strength after weakness, then after
strength gave (you) weakness and grey hair. He creates
what He wills. And it is He Who is the All Knowing, the
All Powerful (i.e. Able to do all things)[30:54]
Death
Every soul will taste death. Then to Us you will be returned. [29:57]
Wherever you may be, death will catch up with you, even if you were in fortified towers. When a good
fortune comes their way, they say, “This is from Allah.” But when a misfortune befalls them, they say,
“This is from you.” Say, “All is from Allah.” So what is the matter with these people, that they hardly
understand a thing?[4:78]
And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And
whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward
of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful[3:145] 3
What is Ru’h(Soul)
4
And they ask you [O Muhammad] concerning the rooh [the spirit]. Say: ‘The rooh: it is one of the things, the
knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little.’ [17:85]
So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall
(you) down prostrating yourselves unto him." [15:29]
Ru’h(Soul) of Adam
5
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made
them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest
you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware.“ [7:172]”
Soul of Human except Adam
Entering of the soul in the human body
The Messenger of Allah (saw) told us: ‘The constituents of one of you is gathered in his mother’s womb for forty
days, then it becomes a clot of blood within another period of forty days. Then it becomes a lump of flesh, and forty
days later, Allah sends His angel to it to breathe into it the soul. The angel comes with instructions concerning four
things, so the angel writes down his livelihood, his death, his deeds and whether he will doomed or blessed.”
(Reported by Muslim, 1528).
The Soul During Death
Umm Salama said that “The Messenger of Allah (saw) entered upon Abu Salamah (after he had died) and his eyes
were open, so he closed them then said, ‘When the soul is taken, the eyes follow it. (Sahih Muslim, 1528).
• Hadith of Al-Baraa Ibn Azeb and related by Al-Bukhari and Muslim
6
The Soul After Death
• The soul of the believer comes out easily; the Kafir is punished with difficulty with which his soul comes out
• The soul of the believer comes out with a scent like the finest musk, and the soul of the Kafir comes out with a
stench like the foulest rotting meat
• The believer’s soul comes out whilst he is praising Allah
• The soul is taken, the eyes follow it
• Angels come with silk cloth and ask the soul to come out
• Angels praise the believer’s soul as it is raised to the Heaven
Soul Journey
7
• Angels come with stinky rug and yanks the soul from the body of the disbeliever
• Angels curse the disbeliever’s soul as it raised up
• The Angels open all of the heavens, one after the other, for the soul of the believer, all of it is opened for him
• The gates of heaven are not opened for the Disbeliever
• Allah (swt) orders that the soul of the Believer should be returned to the earth after his book has been registered
in “al-Illiyun”
• The soul of Kafir is thrown down from the heaven back into his body, after his book has been registered in
“Sijjin”
• The pressing of the grave
• Mental faculties will be restored to the dead in the grave
• Two Angels come to question
• Allah will help and strengthen the believers in the grave
Soul Journey
8
• The righteous man will sit in his grave unafraid before the questioning, whilst the evil man will sit in his grave
utterly terrified.
• For the believer, a door/window will be opened from his grave onto Paradise
• The grave of the believer will be widened as far as eye can see, and the grave of the Kafir will be constricted
• The good deeds will come in the form of a handsome, well dressed, finely perfumed man, who will bring glad
tidings. The bad deeds will come in the form of a scruffily-dressed, stinking man who will bring disturbing news
• The Kafir will be struck with an iron chain until he is turned to dust
• Animals can hear the punishment of the grave
• The soul of the believer is tied to his debt
• The dead does not hear [ the way we do and react ] what goes on the earth
• Exception, people of Kulaib [After battle of Badr] heard the words of the Prophet (saw)
Al Qabr(The Grave)
9
What is Barzakh
That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a
barrier until the Day they are resurrected.[23:100] – Explicit Ref
10
We will punish them twice; then they will be returned to a great punishment [9:101] – Indirect Ref
And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment (i.e. the torment in this world and in their
graves) before this, but most of them know not.[52:47] – Indirect Ref
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make
the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment [40:46] – Indirect Ref
Fitna of Qabr

Anas bin Malik said: Allah's Apostle said, "When (Allah's) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he
even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, 'What did you use to say about this
man (i.e. Muhammad)?' The faithful Believer will say, 'I testify that he is Allah's slave and His Apostle.' Then they will
say to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' So he will see
both his places." (Qatada said, "We were informed that his grave would be made spacious." Then Qatada went back
to the narration of Anas who said;) Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, "What did you use to say
about this man." He will reply, "I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say." So they will say to him,
"Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran)." Then he will be hit with iron hammers
once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except Jinns and human beings
The Messenger of Allah(saw) said, “It has been revealed to me that you will be put to trial in the grave, similar to the
trial of the False Messiah. As for the believer or Muslim, he will say: Muhammad came to us with clear evidence and
we answered him and believed in him. It will be said: Sleep in peace, for we knew you had conviction. As for the
hypocrite or the doubter, he will say: I do not know, for I heard people saying something and I repeated it.”
Exception:

Punishment of Grave
13
Allah's Messenger ( ‫ﷺ‬) very often used to ask his companions, "Did anyone of you see a dream?" So dreams would be narrated to him by those
whom Allah wished to tell. One morning the Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) said, "Last night two persons came to me (in a dream) and woke me up and said to
me, 'Proceed!' I set out with them and we came across a man lying down, and behold, another man was standing over his head, holding a big
rock. Behold, he was throwing the rock at the man's head, injuring it. The rock rolled away and the thrower followed it and took it back. By the
time he reached the man, his head returned to the normal state. The thrower then did the same as he had done before. I said to my two
companions, 'Subhan Allah! Who are these two persons?' They said, 'Proceed!' So we proceeded and came to a man lying flat on his back and
another man standing over his head with an iron hook, and behold, he would put the hook in one side of the man's mouth and tear off that
side of his face to the back (of the neck) and similarly tear his nose from front to back and his eye from front to back. Then he turned to the
other side of the man's face and did just as he had done with the other side. He hardly completed this side when the other side returned to its
normal state. Then he returned to it to repeat what he had done before. I said to my two companions, 'Subhan Allah! Who are these two
persons?' They said to me, 'Proceed!' So we proceeded and came across something like a Tannur (a kind of baking oven, a pit usually clay-lined
for baking bread)." I think the Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) said, "In that oven there was much noise and voices." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "We looked into it
and found naked men and women, and behold, a flame of fire was reaching to them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried
loudly. I asked them, 'Who are these?' They said to me, 'Proceed!' And so we proceeded and came across a river." I think he said, ".... red like
blood." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "And behold, in the river there was a man swimming, and on the bank there was a man who had collected
many stones. Behold, while the other man was swimming, he went near him. The former opened his mouth and the latter (on the bank) threw
a stone into his mouth whereupon he went swimming again. He returned and every time the performance was repeated. I asked my two
companions, 'Who are these (two) persons?' They replied, 'Proceed! Proceed!' And we proceeded till we came to a man with a repulsive
appearance, the most repulsive appearance, you ever saw a man having! Beside him there was a fire and he was kindling it and running around
it. I asked my companions, 'Who is this (man)?' They said to me, 'Proceed! Proceed!'
The punishment in the grave is of two types:
A type which is continuous
Another type which will last for a while, and then stop
Punishment of Grave
14
So we proceeded till we came to a majestic huge garden, greater and better than I have ever seen! My two companions said to me, 'Go up'
and I went up. The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "So we ascended till we reached a city built of gold and silver bricks and we went to its gate and asked
(the gatekeeper) to open the gate, and it was opened and we entered the city and found in it, men with one side of their bodies as handsome
as the handsomest person you have ever seen, and the other side as ugly as the ugliest person you have ever seen. My two companions
ordered those men to throw themselves into the river. Behold, there was a river flowing across (the city), and its water was like milk in
whiteness. Those men went and threw themselves in it and then returned to us after the ugliness (of their bodies) had disappeared and they
became in the best shape." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) further added, "My two companions (angels) said to me, 'This place is the Eden Paradise, and that
is your place.' I raised up my sight, and behold, there I saw a palace like a white cloud! My two companions said to me, 'That (palace) is your
place.' I said to them, 'May Allah bless you both! Let me enter it.' They replied, 'As for now, you will not enter it, but you shall enter it (one
day). I said to them, 'I have seen many wonders tonight. What does all that mean which I have seen?' They replied, 'We will inform you: As for
the first man you came upon whose head was being injured with the rock, he is the symbol of the one who studies the Qur'an and then neither
recites it nor acts on its orders, and sleeps, neglecting the enjoined prayers. As for the man you came upon whose sides of mouth, nostrils and
eyes were torn off from front to back, he is the symbol of the man who goes out of his house in the morning and tells so many lies that it
spreads all over the world. And those naked men and women whom you saw in a construction resembling an oven, they are the adulterers
and the adulteresses. And the man whom you saw swimming in the river and given a stone to swallow, is the eater of usury (Riba). And the
bad looking man whom you saw near the fire kindling it and going round it, is Malik, the gatekeeper of Hell. And the tall man whom you saw in
the garden, is Abraham and the children around him are those children who die with Al-Fitra (the Islamic Faith). The narrator added: Some
Muslims asked the Prophet, "O Allah's Messenger ( ‫ﷺ‬!) What about the children of pagans?" The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) replied, "And also the children of
pagans." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "My two companions added, 'The men you saw half handsome and half ugly were those persons who had
mixed an act that was good with another that was bad, but Allah forgave them.'"
So we proceeded till we reached a garden of deep green dense vegetation, having all sorts of
spring colors. In the midst of the garden there was a very tall man and I could hardly see his
head because of his great height, and around him there were children in such a large number
as I have never seen. I said to my companions, 'Who is this?' They replied, 'Proceed! Proceed!'
Punishment of Grave(Briefly)

Most Punishment in Grave: Not Purifying After Urination
Protecting from the Punishment of Grave
16
1. Suhada (i.e Stomach Disease)
2. Dying in Friday( Fitna or Azab)
3. Any Good Deeds(Salah, Siyam etc)
4. Memorizing and Reciting Surahtul Mulk
5. Dua: The Messenger of Allah ( ‫ﷺ‬) used to seek (Allah's) protection after prayers in these words: "Alla-
humma inni a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal- bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min an uradda ila ardhalil-'umur, wa a'udhu
bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from cowardice,
miserliness and from being sent back to a feeble age; and, seek refuge with You from the trials of this life
and those of the grave).
6. Dua for other People(Attending Jazanah)
Images of the blessings of the grave
17
1-His grave is furnished from Jannah for him
2-He is clothed in garments from Jannah
3-A gate to Jannah is opened for him, and its breezes come to him, and he smells its fragrance and he feels
delight in what he can see of its blessings.
4-His grave is made wide and spacious for him.
5-He is given the glad tidings of Allaah’s pleasure and Jannah. Hence he longs for the Hour to begin.
6-He will be happy when he sees what would have been his place in Hell, which Allaah has replaced for him
with a place in Jannah
7-He will sleep the sleep of a bridegroom
8-His grave will be illuminated for him:
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When the deceased (or he said: any
one of you) is buried, two black and blue angels, one of whom is called Munkar and the other Nakeer come to him. They say, ‘What did you say about
this man?’ And he says what he used to say, that he is the slave of Allaah and His Messenger, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah and that
Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.’ They say, ‘We knew that you would say this.’ Then his grave is expanded, seventy cubits wide, and it is filled
with light. He says, ‘Let me go back to my family and tell them.’ They say, ‘Sleep like a bridegroom whom no one will wake but his most beloved,’ until
Allaah raises him up. But if he was a hypocrite he says, ‘I heard the people saying something and I said likewise, I do not know.’ So they say, ‘We knew
that you would say that.’ Then it is said to the earth, ‘Squeeze him,’ so it squeezes him until his ribs interlock. And he will remain like that, being
tormented, until Allaah raises him up.”
Deeds benefits to the Dead
18
Prayers for forgiveness offered by both sons and daughters of the deceased bring great benefits:
Prophet(saw) said: A mans status will be raised in Paradise and he will ask, How did I get here? He will be told, By your sons duaas
(prayers) for forgiveness for you
Sadaqah (charity) given on his behalf:
Aaishah (ra) reported that a man said to the Prophet (saw): My mother has passed away, and if she could have spoken, she
would have given something in charity. Will she receive a reward if I give something on her behalf?" He said, "Yes.
Ibn Abbaas (ra) reported that the mother of Sad ibn Ubaadah (ra) died when he was away from her. He said: "O Messenger of
Allaah(saw), my mother has died and I am away from her. Will it benefit her anything if I give in charity on her behalf?" He said,
"Yes." He said, "Then I ask you to be my witness that I am giving my garden al-Mikhraaf (so called because it bore so many dates)
in charity on her behalf."
Sacrifice given on his/her behalf:
When the Prophet (saw) offered a sacrifice, he said: "In the name of Allaah, O Allaah, on behalf of Muhammad and the family of
Muhammad" (reported by Muslim, no. 1967) and the family of Muhammad(saw) included both the living and the dead
The Messenger of Allah(saw) said, “The best of what a man leaves behind are
three: a righteous child who supplicates for him, ongoing charity the reward of
which reaches him, and knowledge that is acted upon after him.
Deeds benefits to the Dead
19
Providing the Water bring great benefits:
Sad ibn Ubaadah said: "I said: O Messenger of Allaah(saw), my mother has died. Should I give charity on her behalf? He said, Yes. I
asked, What kind of charity is best? He said, Providing water
Hajj/Umrah/Fasting on his/her behalf:
Abdullaah ibn Buraydah reported that his father (ra) said: "While I was sitting with the Messenger of Allaah(saw), a woman came
to him and said: I gave my mother a slave-woman in charity, and now my mother has died. He said: You have got your reward, and
your right of inheritance has brought your gift back to you. She said, O Messenger of Allaah, she still had one month to fast can I
fast it on her behalf? He said, Fast it on her behalf. She said, She never went to Hajj can I perform Hajj on her behalf? He said,
Perform Hajj on her behalf.
To fulfil their nadhr (vow):
A woman came to the Prophet (saw) and said: "My mother made a vow to perform Hajj but she died before she could do it. Can I
perform Hajj on her behalf?" He said, "Yes, perform Hajj on her behalf. Dont you think that if your mother owed a debt you would
pay it off?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Then pay off what is owed to Allaah, for Allaah is more deserving of having vows fulfilled.

Good or Bad End
22
O you who believe! Fear Allah (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as
He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of
Islam (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allah[3:102]
And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death). [15:99]
The Prophet(saw) said: “A man may do deeds characteristic of the people of the (Hell) Fire, so much so that there is
only the distance of a cubit between him and it, and then what has been written (by the angel) surpasses, and so he
starts doing deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise and enters Paradise. Similarly, a person may do deeds
characteristic of the people of Paradise, so much so that there is only the distance of a cubit between him and it, and
then what has been written (by the angel) surpasses, and he starts doing deeds of the people of (Hell-) Fire and
enters Hell-Fire.”
The Prophet(saw) said: “None of you (Muslims) should die but having a good thought of Allah, the All-Majestic, the
All-Mighty.
The Cause for Bad End
23
First Delaying Repentance:
And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful. [24:31]
“O people! Turn in repentance to Allah. Verily! I turn in repentance to Him one hundred times every day.”
Loving the SIN and getting used to it:
“The Prophet(saw) said: “He who dies on
something (i.e. doing it), Allah will resurrect
him on the same state (he was in) before his
death.” .”
Suicide:
Prophet(saw) said: Whoever throws himself down from a mountain and kills himself
will be throwing himself down in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever. Whoever drinks
poison and kills himself will be sipping it in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever.
Whoever kills himself with a piece of iron will have that iron in his hand, thrusting it
into his belly in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever.
Too Much Love for Duniya
“Abdullah ibn Umar (ra) said, The Messenger of Allah (saw) took me by the shoulder and said: “Be in this world as though you were a
stranger or a wayfarer.” And Ibn Umar (RahiyAllahu ‘anhuma) used to say, “In the evening do not expect [to live until] the morning, and
in the morning do not expect [to live until] the evening. Take [advantage of] your health before times of sickness, and [take advantage
of] your life before your death”
Sign of Good End
24
Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah " and then remained on a right course - the angels will descend
upon them, [saying], "Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were
promised [41:30]
The Messenger of Allaah (saw) said: “Whoever loves to meet Allaah, Allaah loves to meet him, and whoever hates to meet Allaah,
Allaah hates to meet him.” I said, “O Prophet of Allaah, do you mean hating death, for all of us hate death?” He said, “It is not like that;
but when the believer is given the glad tidings of the mercy and pleasure of Allaah, and His Paradise, he loves to meet Allaah, And when
the kaafir is given the tidings of the wrath and punishment of Allaah, he hates to meet Allaah and Allaah hates to meet him.”
(Appear to the dying person)
Sign of Good End
25
Uttering the shaahadah (Testimony of faith) when dying:
Prophet (saw) said, “A person whose last words are Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah [there is no god but Allaah] will enter Paradise
(May appear to the other person)
Dying with sweat on the forehead, when dying:
The Prophet(saw) said: The believer dies with sweat on his forehead
Dying on the night or day of Friday:
The Prophet(saw) said: There is no Muslim who dies on the day of Friday or the night of Friday, but Allaah will protect
him from the trial (fitnah) of the grave
Dying the Path of Allah:
Think not of those as dead who are killed in the way of Allaah. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have
provision[3:169]
Sign of Good End
26
Dying of the plague:
Prophet (saw) said: The plague is martyrdom for every Muslim
Aa’ishah(ra) said: I asked the Messenger of Allaah (saw) about the plague, and he told me that it is a punishment that Allaah sends upon
whomsoever He will, and that Allaah has made it a mercy for the believers, for there is no one who stays in his land at the time of a plague,
bearing that with patience and seeking Allaah’s reward, knowing that nothing will befall him but that which Allaah has decreed for him, but
he will be given a reward like that of a martyr
(May appear to the other person)
Dying of a stomach disease:
The Prophet(saw) said: ….. and whoever dies of a stomach disease is a martyr.
Dying because of being crushed by a falling wall or by drowning:
The Prophet(saw) said: The martyrs are five: the one who dies of plague, the one who dies of a stomach disease, the one
who drowns, the one who is crushed by a falling wall, and the one who is martyred for the sake of Allaah
Sign of Good End
27
If a woman dies as a result of childbirth, or when she is pregnant:
Prophet (saw) said: A woman who dies with child is a martyr
Prophet(saw) said: A woman who is killed by the child in her womb attains martyrdom, and her child will drag her by his umbilical cord to
Paradise.
(May appear to the other person)
Dying to defend one’s religion, one’s wealth or one’s life:
The Prophet(saw) said: Whoever is killed defending his wealth is a martyr; whoever is killed defending his religion is a
martyr; whoever is killed in self-defence is a martyr
and in another narration: Whoever is killed defending his wealth is a martyr
One of the signs of a good end is dying whilst doing a righteous deed:
The Prophet(saw) said: Whoever says Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, seeking the Countenance of Allaah thereby, and that is the
last of his deeds, will enter Paradise. Whoever gives charity and that is the last of his deeds will enter Paradise

A journey of Soul

  • 1.
  • 2. A Journey of Man 2 And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims[46:15] Verily, Allah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allah is AllKnower, AllAware (of things).[ 31:34] Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "The lifespan for my Ummah is from sixty years to seventy [years]. Allah is He Who created you in (a state of) weakness, then gave you strength after weakness, then after strength gave (you) weakness and grey hair. He creates what He wills. And it is He Who is the All Knowing, the All Powerful (i.e. Able to do all things)[30:54]
  • 3. Death Every soul will taste death. Then to Us you will be returned. [29:57] Wherever you may be, death will catch up with you, even if you were in fortified towers. When a good fortune comes their way, they say, “This is from Allah.” But when a misfortune befalls them, they say, “This is from you.” Say, “All is from Allah.” So what is the matter with these people, that they hardly understand a thing?[4:78] And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful[3:145] 3
  • 4. What is Ru’h(Soul) 4 And they ask you [O Muhammad] concerning the rooh [the spirit]. Say: ‘The rooh: it is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little.’ [17:85] So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him." [15:29] Ru’h(Soul) of Adam
  • 5. 5 And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware.“ [7:172]” Soul of Human except Adam Entering of the soul in the human body The Messenger of Allah (saw) told us: ‘The constituents of one of you is gathered in his mother’s womb for forty days, then it becomes a clot of blood within another period of forty days. Then it becomes a lump of flesh, and forty days later, Allah sends His angel to it to breathe into it the soul. The angel comes with instructions concerning four things, so the angel writes down his livelihood, his death, his deeds and whether he will doomed or blessed.” (Reported by Muslim, 1528).
  • 6. The Soul During Death Umm Salama said that “The Messenger of Allah (saw) entered upon Abu Salamah (after he had died) and his eyes were open, so he closed them then said, ‘When the soul is taken, the eyes follow it. (Sahih Muslim, 1528). • Hadith of Al-Baraa Ibn Azeb and related by Al-Bukhari and Muslim 6 The Soul After Death • The soul of the believer comes out easily; the Kafir is punished with difficulty with which his soul comes out • The soul of the believer comes out with a scent like the finest musk, and the soul of the Kafir comes out with a stench like the foulest rotting meat • The believer’s soul comes out whilst he is praising Allah • The soul is taken, the eyes follow it • Angels come with silk cloth and ask the soul to come out • Angels praise the believer’s soul as it is raised to the Heaven
  • 7. Soul Journey 7 • Angels come with stinky rug and yanks the soul from the body of the disbeliever • Angels curse the disbeliever’s soul as it raised up • The Angels open all of the heavens, one after the other, for the soul of the believer, all of it is opened for him • The gates of heaven are not opened for the Disbeliever • Allah (swt) orders that the soul of the Believer should be returned to the earth after his book has been registered in “al-Illiyun” • The soul of Kafir is thrown down from the heaven back into his body, after his book has been registered in “Sijjin” • The pressing of the grave • Mental faculties will be restored to the dead in the grave • Two Angels come to question • Allah will help and strengthen the believers in the grave
  • 8. Soul Journey 8 • The righteous man will sit in his grave unafraid before the questioning, whilst the evil man will sit in his grave utterly terrified. • For the believer, a door/window will be opened from his grave onto Paradise • The grave of the believer will be widened as far as eye can see, and the grave of the Kafir will be constricted • The good deeds will come in the form of a handsome, well dressed, finely perfumed man, who will bring glad tidings. The bad deeds will come in the form of a scruffily-dressed, stinking man who will bring disturbing news • The Kafir will be struck with an iron chain until he is turned to dust • Animals can hear the punishment of the grave • The soul of the believer is tied to his debt • The dead does not hear [ the way we do and react ] what goes on the earth • Exception, people of Kulaib [After battle of Badr] heard the words of the Prophet (saw)
  • 10. What is Barzakh That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.[23:100] – Explicit Ref 10 We will punish them twice; then they will be returned to a great punishment [9:101] – Indirect Ref And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment (i.e. the torment in this world and in their graves) before this, but most of them know not.[52:47] – Indirect Ref The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment [40:46] – Indirect Ref
  • 11. Fitna of Qabr 11 Anas bin Malik said: Allah's Apostle said, "When (Allah's) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, 'What did you use to say about this man (i.e. Muhammad)?' The faithful Believer will say, 'I testify that he is Allah's slave and His Apostle.' Then they will say to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' So he will see both his places." (Qatada said, "We were informed that his grave would be made spacious." Then Qatada went back to the narration of Anas who said;) Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, "What did you use to say about this man." He will reply, "I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say." So they will say to him, "Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran)." Then he will be hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except Jinns and human beings The Messenger of Allah(saw) said, “It has been revealed to me that you will be put to trial in the grave, similar to the trial of the False Messiah. • 13. Punishment of Grave 13 Allah's Messenger ( ‫ﷺ‬) very often used to ask his companions, "Did anyone of you see a dream?" So dreams would be narrated to him by those whom Allah wished to tell. One morning the Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) said, "Last night two persons came to me (in a dream) and woke me up and said to me, 'Proceed!' I set out with them and we came across a man lying down, and behold, another man was standing over his head, holding a big rock. Behold, he was throwing the rock at the man's head, injuring it. The rock rolled away and the thrower followed it and took it back. By the time he reached the man, his head returned to the normal state. The thrower then did the same as he had done before. I said to my two companions, 'Subhan Allah! Who are these two persons?' They said, 'Proceed!' So we proceeded and came to a man lying flat on his back and another man standing over his head with an iron hook, and behold, he would put the hook in one side of the man's mouth and tear off that side of his face to the back (of the neck) and similarly tear his nose from front to back and his eye from front to back. Then he turned to the other side of the man's face and did just as he had done with the other side. He hardly completed this side when the other side returned to its normal state. Then he returned to it to repeat what he had done before. I said to my two companions, 'Subhan Allah! Who are these two persons?' They said to me, 'Proceed!' So we proceeded and came across something like a Tannur (a kind of baking oven, a pit usually clay-lined for baking bread)." I think the Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) said, "In that oven there was much noise and voices." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "We looked into it and found naked men and women, and behold, a flame of fire was reaching to them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried loudly. I asked them, 'Who are these?' They said to me, 'Proceed!' And so we proceeded and came across a river." I think he said, ".... red like blood." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "And behold, in the river there was a man swimming, and on the bank there was a man who had collected many stones. Behold, while the other man was swimming, he went near him. The former opened his mouth and the latter (on the bank) threw a stone into his mouth whereupon he went swimming again. He returned and every time the performance was repeated. I asked my two companions, 'Who are these (two) persons?' They replied, 'Proceed! Proceed!' And we proceeded till we came to a man with a repulsive appearance, the most repulsive appearance, you ever saw a man having! Beside him there was a fire and he was kindling it and running around it. I asked my companions, 'Who is this (man)?' They said to me, 'Proceed! Proceed!' The punishment in the grave is of two types: A type which is continuous Another type which will last for a while, and then stop
  • 14. Punishment of Grave 14 So we proceeded till we came to a majestic huge garden, greater and better than I have ever seen! My two companions said to me, 'Go up' and I went up. The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "So we ascended till we reached a city built of gold and silver bricks and we went to its gate and asked (the gatekeeper) to open the gate, and it was opened and we entered the city and found in it, men with one side of their bodies as handsome as the handsomest person you have ever seen, and the other side as ugly as the ugliest person you have ever seen. My two companions ordered those men to throw themselves into the river. Behold, there was a river flowing across (the city), and its water was like milk in whiteness. Those men went and threw themselves in it and then returned to us after the ugliness (of their bodies) had disappeared and they became in the best shape." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) further added, "My two companions (angels) said to me, 'This place is the Eden Paradise, and that is your place.' I raised up my sight, and behold, there I saw a palace like a white cloud! My two companions said to me, 'That (palace) is your place.' I said to them, 'May Allah bless you both! Let me enter it.' They replied, 'As for now, you will not enter it, but you shall enter it (one day). I said to them, 'I have seen many wonders tonight. What does all that mean which I have seen?' They replied, 'We will inform you: As for the first man you came upon whose head was being injured with the rock, he is the symbol of the one who studies the Qur'an and then neither recites it nor acts on its orders, and sleeps, neglecting the enjoined prayers. As for the man you came upon whose sides of mouth, nostrils and eyes were torn off from front to back, he is the symbol of the man who goes out of his house in the morning and tells so many lies that it spreads all over the world. And those naked men and women whom you saw in a construction resembling an oven, they are the adulterers and the adulteresses. And the man whom you saw swimming in the river and given a stone to swallow, is the eater of usury (Riba). And the bad looking man whom you saw near the fire kindling it and going round it, is Malik, the gatekeeper of Hell. And the tall man whom you saw in the garden, is Abraham and the children around him are those children who die with Al-Fitra (the Islamic Faith). The narrator added: Some Muslims asked the Prophet, "O Allah's Messenger ( ‫ﷺ‬!) What about the children of pagans?" The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) replied, "And also the children of pagans." The Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬) added, "My two companions added, 'The men you saw half handsome and half ugly were those persons who had mixed an act that was good with another that was bad, but Allah forgave them.'" So we proceeded till we reached a garden of deep green dense vegetation, having all sorts of spring colors. In the midst of the garden there was a very tall man and I could hardly see his head because of his great height, and around him there were children in such a large number as I have never seen. I said to my companions, 'Who is this?' They replied, 'Proceed! Proceed!'

He says, ‘Let me go back to my family and tell them.’ They say, ‘Sleep like a bridegroom whom no one will wake but his most beloved,’ until Allaah raises him up. But if he was a hypocrite he says, ‘I heard the people saying something and I said likewise, I do not know.’ So they say, ‘We knew that you would say that.’ Then it is said to the earth, ‘Squeeze him,’ so it squeezes him until his ribs interlock. And he will remain like that, being tormented, until Allaah raises him up.”
