A transistor is a semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electronic signals and
electrical power. It is composed of semiconductor material usually with at least three
terminals for connection to an external circuit

Transistor switches can be used to switch a low voltage DC
device (e.g. LED’s) ON or OFF by using a transistor in its
saturated or cut-off stat

▪ Active Region – the transistor operates as an amplifier and Ic = β*Ib
▪ Saturation – the transistor is “Fully-ON” operating as a switch and Ic = I(saturation)
▪ Cut-off – the transistor is “Fully-OFF” operating as a switch and Ic = 0
▪ Common Base – has Voltage Gain but no Current Gain.
▪ Common Emitter – has both Current and Voltage Gain.
▪ Common Collector – has Current Gain but no Voltage Gain
