INTRODUCTION
Building construction is one of the fast growing Industries in the modern world. Now a days
man depends on construction. For complete a construction successfully we should clearly
know the construction cost. A Quantity surveyor job is estimate the cost of work by doing the
measurement. Therefore a Quantity surveyor must take the taking off list and measure the
quantity of the material and cost. Measurements as a module in ‘BTEC HND in Quantity
surveying’ which gives the preliminary idea on the cost of building structure, man power,
machines, materials, which are the most important factors to be considered when building a
structure.
This is an individual assignment and I have completed this assignment by gathering information from
the site and lecture notes, referring books browsing internet and my own knowledge. I hope this
assignment will provide the necessary information in Measurements subject, and for those who read
this assignment gain particular knowledge about this subject.

FOR TIME RELATED CHARGES AND FIVE SELECTED ITEMS FOR
METHOD RELATED CHARGES OF PRELIMINARIES FOR ONE OF THE
ABOVE TASK, STATING THE TASK SELECTED.
TIME RELATED CHARGES (CONTRACTOR’S GENERAL COST ITEMS)
1. Contractor shall allow for maintaining temporary electricity supply and temporary
water supply throughout the construction work and paying all connection charges and
bills to the relevant authorities.(A42.1.1.2)
2. Contractor shall allow for providing sanitary facilities for consultant’s staff &
works.(A36.1.2.2)
3. Contractor shall allow for communication facilities for carrying out the work
(A42.1.5.2)
4. Contractor shall allow for the cost of preparation and furnishing of progress charts,
reports photographs, schedules, shop drawings and the like.
5. Contractor shall allow for erection of name board as per specification (A36.1.4.2)
METHOD RELATED CHARGES (CONTRACTOR’S GENERAL COST ITEMS)

4. Contractor shall allow for erection of temporary accommodation the contractors staff
and workmen at the site
5. Contractor shall allow for contractor’s workmen compensation policy.
6. Contractor shall allow for erection of temporary office for consultant staff.
4.2 WRITE FIVE PREAMBLE CLAUSES FOR TWO SELECTED WORK
SECTION OF TASK 01 AND 02 ABOVE.
Formwork
1. Rates include material cost, fixing and dismantling
2. Formwork rate is to be included the required lubricant
3. Wastages to be included
4. 30mm Diameter G.I pipes use for supporting
In-situ concrete
1. Rates shall include for Mixing, Placing, Handling and hoisting into position.
2. Concrete shall cure for 14 days
3. Rates shall include for De-watering where necessary
4. Rates shall include for the cost of testing of materials and samples to establish
compliance to specifications

4.3 WRITE SPECIFICATION NOTE FOR ANY ONE OF THE
SELECTED ITEM OF EACH ABOVE TASK. YOU MAY USE A
STRANDED PUBLISHED SOURCE OF SPECIFICATION WITH
RELEVANT MODIFICATION AND APPROPRIATE REFERENCE.
1) Designated mix for foundations
 The concrete will be unreinforced. Nominal maximum size of aggregate 20 mm and
an accelerator or retarder may be used as admixtures.
2) Placing and compacting
 Concrete placing surface area should be clean and free from dust. At time of placing
concrete, the temperature must not be less than 5 degree C.
 It is fully compacted thoroughly until air bubbles cease to appear on the top.
Mechanical vibrator shall be used in beams compaction.
3) Curing and protecting
 After compacting concrete surface is prevented by covering with polythene sheets as
soon as practicable.
 All exposed concrete surfaces shall be covered with hessian or other suitable material,
and this shall be kept moist for at least 14 days after the placing of the concrete.
Curing is essential to prevent the formation of hair cracks on the surface of the
concrete caused by the speedy drying action of sun and winds. (Specification of
concrete work, chapter five)
 Regardless of weather conditions not less than 10 days for wearing surfaces of floor
and pavements.
 Then, adequately protect concrete from shock, indentation and physical damage.
4) Reinforcement for concrete work
 At the time of placing concrete, reinforcement to be clean and free from corrosive and
dust which may affect the bond between the reinforcement and concrete.
 Reinforcement is fixed before the concrete is placed. Maintain the specified cover
which is necessary to support in position. For this work used type of steels are Mild
steel and Tor steel.

CONCLUSION
The Advanced Building Measurement assignment was helped to evaluate the subject and
gave chance to practice the knowledge. For complete this assignment I studied how to take
measurement for Concrete structure, Drainage system and Steel frame work. This assignment
so such as it was helped me to gain huge knowledge
This module was very interesting and useful to get knowledge in construction industry.
