1. What is Research?
 Research is the process of collecting, analyzing and
interpreting data in order to increase our understanding
of a phenomenon about which we are interested or
concerned (Leedy and Omrod, 2004)

2. CHOOSING A RESEARCH TOPIC
 Selecting a research topic, it is important for a researcher to consider the
following issues:
 1- Each title has clear subject (IV) and object (DV).
 2. Each title must indicate clearly the target population (i.e. where the
study will be conducted).
 3. Title does not end with a period

 5. A good title must be fully explanatory when standing alone.
 6. a good title must avoid words that serve no purpose which increase length and
misleading

• Independent variable: is variable whose effect is being measured
(cause)
• Dependent variable: is variable on whom effect is being observed
(effect).

• Positive research topics: the role, importance, significance

• Negative key word: The Effect, impact, influence… etc.

A social science research topic should specify a case study on a
geo-political location e.g. Mogadishu, Jowhar, or the case also can

 A thesis is a document submitted in support of candidate for an
academic degree or professional qualification presenting the author's
research and findings.
 The required complexity or quality of research of a thesis or dissertation
can vary by country, university, or program, and the required minimum
study period may thus vary significantly in duration
