1. In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Milo Marshall
2. Science Fiction Genre Conventions
In my opening sequence I have tried to challenge the idea of science
fiction, yet still keeping some of the main connotations associated with
science fiction movies/films/novels.
Obviously some connotations corresponded, for the idea behind science
fiction is to “write rationally about alternative possible worlds.”
So some of the ideas we clearly had to make work in the world of science
fiction, i.e. the supernatural abilities of our main characters, this would be
associated as definite key iconography to said film genre.
This allows us to then make the audience question their own views on other
peoples choices; science fiction is about searching for meaning in
philosophical concepts such as desire and social structure in an environment
that would really test these ideas to the brink.
The concept that our opening sequence will mostly be looking at is social
structure, because the characters in our opening sequence want nothing
more than to be able to use their abilities wherever and whenever to make
their own lives easier. This will however cause conflict with the main public
who won‟t genetically have access to these abilities.
3. Barthes‟ Codes
The codes most associated with our opening sequence are the
Semantic and Hermeneutic codes.
The Semantic code is the voice of person, this can be efficiently applied
to the public or the views of the audience.
The Hermeneutic code is the voice of truth, so we can relate this to the
thoughts that the protagonist will come to have when he will encounter
problems concerning his abilities, is he using them to help those who
can‟t help themselves? “Am I doing what is right?” “was there a reason I
came to have these abilities?”. This kind of questioning will help the
audience to relate to his character and ask themselves the same things
if they were in his shoes.
These two voices will help to connote the „superhero‟ meaning that are
within the narrative, but the also to question what that meaning is.
4. Production Logo
As it is the norm to have a production logo at the start of a
film, I decided to make it fit the narrative of our film.
The space scene dictates that our company is scientific and
rational, but the unveiling of the clean metal from the rocky
outer shell connotes our films‟ character development that
comes with the questioning of existence and meaning.
