Evaluation questions 1
1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
There are two social groups if not including the populous in general in which
my film represents. The first is Adult racers. These are represented as being
fun loving and thrill seekers. The way we constructed these representations
was by showing the actors laughing and being excited over their victory. This
creates a sense of ‘kidishness’ about the character instead of having them be
serious and really cynical they are more fun loving, this conveys a character
that the audience can engage with and feel happy along side (Empathy).
Weirdly and something that occurs with other racing films they aren’t
represented as criminals, even though they are breaking the law. This is
because they are still the protagonists and we project ourselves onto the
character to feel more like the hero and gain an ‘awesome’ experience like the
character would. You view the film in their point of view and you gain a feel
for the motives and they create an anti hero effect which is why you feel that
way about the character. In terms of the actual characters the two
protagonists are represented as being quite relaxed because they don’t seem
to engaged over their performance but that could be because they are new
actors and aren’t professional. Because we know they are teenagers they fit
the stereotype of being relaxed and yet stay out all night and do illegal things.
This goes against their portrayal of adults because it seems so chilled and laid
back where as adults are seen as quite stressed and anti fun. In conclusion the
portrayal of adults is a laid back and empathetic criminal.
There is a second portrayal for racers, which is dangerous. The little hooded
racer who gets out of his car and shoots and kills a protagonist shows this. At
this point in the story you don’t know why the character is shot, the only clue
you are given is from the dialogue from the shooter where he mutters a line
saying “This one’s for Freddie”. From that you assume it must be a revenge
killing but it still shows a certain criminal mentality because you don’t know
anything about Freddie. This shows a violent side to these characters, which
fits the criminal stereotype, which conveys a negative attitude to this
character and group of people. Because the kill seems without reason it does
create a very psychopathic feel for this character. Psychopathy is very much
linked with danger and death so this creates an extremely negative portrayal
for these groups of people and it only takes the actions of one to spoil it when
the others are quite happy. Overall the killer character creates a negative
image in your head, which shows a very negative feel and representation.
The last Stereotype is of the general population. There is a portrayal of a
rebellious nature for them, this is shown by one slide which says “most people
abide by the new laws, others choose not to”. This shows that some of
population has a rebellious nature because they don’t abide the new laws set
2. to keep them safe. Instead they would rather break the law and have fun. You
still do not see these people as criminals though because they still relate to
you, would you do what they are doing in that circumstance. You still
empathize with the general populous because you wouldn’t want to have
spent tens of thousands of pounds on a car only to be told you can’t have it
because it’s dangerous. Because of this you still see these people as good
guys, which creates quite a confusing stereotype. The stereotype is still that
the general population is rebellious.
