1. MAINTAINING CERTIFICATION tS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE EDUCATOR.
Type of Gertificate
Professional. The educator holds an eamed ;rndergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited teacher
education institution.
lnitial. The educator holds an earned undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited teacher education
institution with no teaching experience. One or more ancillary requiiements must be met for the Professional
Certificate.
Critical Need. The educator is participating in the altemative certification program.
Temoorarv. The educator must complete one or more ancitlary requirements for a Professional Certificate.
Graded. The educator must complete additional requirements for the Professional Certificate.
Wanant. The educator must complete additional requirements for the professional Certificate. '
Soecial,Subiect. A Special Subject certificate is issued at the request of the employing sctrool district, is valid in the
requesting district and must be renewed annually. The individualqualifies as an'Exiert in tne fbtO.
Permit. A permit is issued at the request of the employing school district and is valid for the academic year in wtrich
they are requested. The educator has a valid South Clrolina teaching certificate and twelve semester hours of
credit in the area for wtrich the permit is requested.
Endorsement. The educator has completed specialized training in the area.
fra9e-eod Fdustrv. The educator meets training and experience requirements in a specialized area. The
level/class of the certificate reflects a combination of education and work experience according to Regulation 43€3.
Provisipnal Tlade anC lnCys!ry. The educator must complete professional education courses and test requirements
according to Regutation 43-63.
Renewal of Certificate
A Professional Certificate.is valid for five years and expires on June 30 of the expiration year. Renewal requires the
educator to submit official transcripUdocumentration of six semester hours or the equivilent of renewal cred1 in a
content area during the certification validity period. The semester hours must be eamed through an accredited
college/university or through South Carolina State Department of Education approved certificate renewal courses.
continuing Education Units (cEU's) are not accepted ior renewalcredit.
Experience Credit
Experience credit for the. curent school year is not officially recorded in the educator's file until after September 1.
No partial years of experience appear on the Educator certificate.
Duplicate Certificate
Duplicate certificates may be requested for a fee of $5.00 (payable by check or money order only).
A Request for Change/Action must accompany all requests for evaluations, worksheets, duplicate
certificates, change of name or address, renewat, etc. .
