VIFendorsementLetter
- 1. April 21, 2016
To whom it may concern:
Mikel Ortiz de Lataburu completed three successful years of exchange teaching as a
Spanish teacher, August 1998 – June 2001, at W.S. Sandel Elementary in the Richland One
School District in Columbia, SC, USA. VIF International Education of the Center for
International Education, Inc., Exchange Visitor Program sponsored Mikel on a J-1 visa
during this time.
Mikel was selected for this program from a large pool of applicants and went on to become
an accomplished educator, skilled cultural ambassador and good representative of VIF
International Education. Participating host school districts are not obligated to employ
cultural exchange teachers for subsequent years if that individual is not successful. Thus, it
is a tribute to Mikel’s efforts that participation has met or exceeded the expectations of
both VIF and the host school district.
A key characteristic of a successful exchange teacher is adaptability. Mikel was asked to
begin teaching in the host school immediately after arrival in the U.S. During this initial
period, Mikel had to adapt to a new culture and education system, locate housing, make
automobile arrangements, buy furniture, secure a driver's license and Social Security
number, and adjust to new demands and routines. This ability to adapt to new, different,
and unexpected circumstances is a significant skill and an asset that should serve Mikel
well in future employment situations.
In conclusion, by becoming a VIF teacher, Mikel has taken on a significant challenge and we
are appreciative of the contributions made to Mikel‘s students, school, and community. We
wish Mikel success in all future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Laura Tobal
Executive Director, Cultural Exchange Teachers
