RE: Reference for Mikel Ortiz de Lataburu
28th May 2016
To whom it may concern,
I have had the pleasure to work alongside Mikel Ortiz de Lataburu for the past two years. In
the relatively short time I have known him, I see him to be a passionate educator and a
knowledgeable and dedicated Head of Department.
Mikel is an avid user of technology in order to communicate, organize and share information
with his team and the other Heads of Department. He has been integral in the development
of the Language Acquisition curriculum through Managebac and, in the bigger scheme of
things, has helped lead American International School Lusaka with his knowledge and
understanding of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP).
Mikel uses technology as a tool for learning within his classroom. As a 1:1 iPad school, with
the opportunity for students to bring their own laptop, teachers need to be flexible by
providing choice when planning suitable assignments and tasks. Mikel has used devices in a
number of ways in his classes: as a tool for research; to absorb content; to provide
independent practice through Linguascope, Duolingo and a variety of other resources; as a
tool to support the organization of his students through Google apps, Notability etc; and
arguably most importantly, as a tool to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of
Spanish through creation & presentation based apps such as iMovie.
Most importantly, Mikel strives to extend himself with regards to technology use. If he sees
an area for improvement in a school, class or department, he will research better ways to
tackle the issue independently before sharing with his colleagues.
I wish Mikel Ortiz de Lataburu all the best for the future.
Kind Regards,
Tony Potts,
MYP Design Teacher, Managebac Coordinator, Tech Integration Specialist &
iPad Coach
