PRE-TEST
Direction. Read each item carefully. Choose the letter
of the correct answer and write it in your notebook.
7. 2. Which of the following describes decantation?
a. Liquid is separated from a solid by gently
pouring off the liquid.
b. Substances are easily separated just by taking
out the impurities with a hand.
c. Separate solid mixtures which have
components of different sizes using a sieve.
d. Solids can settle to the bottom of the mixture
and pour off the particle-free part of the liquid.
PRE-TEST
8. 3. What happens to the oil if you mix it with
water?

4. In the process of decantation, the mixtures
must be left _______________?

easily?
a. Let the mud sit for a while and pour the water
out.
b. Let the water evaporate.
c. It can’t be separated.
d. Use a magnet.

10. MOTIVATION
What can you see in the picture?
Do you know how to cook rice?
What are the steps in cooking rice?
11. LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Lesson Objective:
• Identify mixtures that can be separated
through decantation
• Identify the process of separating
mixtures that use the decantation
technique.
• Apply the technique in everyday life.
12. ACTIVITY # 1 (Explore)
Activity 1: Let’s Experiment!
The teacher will divide the class into five
groups. The teacher will ask the learners to
bring out their materials, perform the activity by
following the instructions, and then answer the
guide questions.
Activity Objective: To separate mixtures using
the decantation technique.
13. ACTIVITY # 1 (Explore)
Materials: a cup of oil, a plastic cup with water, an
empty plastic cup
Procedures:
1. Prepare three tablespoons of cooking oil, a plastic
cup with water, and an empty plastic cup.
2. Mix the cooking oil with the water in a plastic cup.
3. Wait for a few seconds.
4. Slowly pour the mixture into the empty plastic
cup.

TOTAL
ACCURACY
The content of the
lesson is clearly
shown
The team exhibits
very clear ideas on
the task related to
their chosen field.
There are vague ideas
on the context of the
task and their field of
interest.
There are unclear
ideas on the context
of the task given.
CREATIVITY
Resourcefulness of
the group with sense
of uniqueness
It exhibits high value
of creativity and
uniqueness without
compromising all the
contents of their
output.
It shows enough
creativity and
uniqueness
compromising some
of the contents of
their output.
It has low value of
creativity of the group
compromising the
essential contents.
TEAMWORK
Cooperation and
involvement of
members are
revealing
All members are
cooperative and took
each part that
contributed to their
success.
Most of the members
show involvement.
Very few members

GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. What kind of mixture is oil and water?
___________________________________
2. What happened to the cooking oil when mixed with
water?
___________________________________
3. What substance in the mixture is less dense?
___________________________________
4. How do you separate cooking oil from the water?
___________________________________
17. CONCEPT INPUT
Decantation
• A technique used in separating a less-dense
substance from a dense one.
• In the process of decantation, the mixture is
left undisturbed. When the components are
separated, the less dense substance could be
removed by scooping using a spoon or it can
be removed by slowly pouring out the less-
dense substance.
18. CONCEPT INPUT
Oil in water could be removed using the
decantation technique. The fats that float
in your sinigang could be removed by
decantation or scooping. Some of the
mixtures that can be separated by
decantation are the following: oil in
water, gasoline in water, Sinigang with
floating fats, mud and water.
19. APPLICATION (Elaborate)
Think, Pair, Share Activity
Let the learners find a partner to
think of a mixture that could be
separated by decantation. Let them list
down as many as they can.
20. GENERALIZATION
Read the sentences carefully. Write TRUE if
the statement is correct and FALSE if the
statement is wrong. Write your answers on your
paper.
_________1. Decantation is a process of
separating less dense substances from dense
ones.
_________2. We use the decantation technique to
separate salt from water.
21. GENERALIZATION
_________3. In the decantation technique, the
mixture must be disturbed to be separated.
_________4. Decantation is used to separate
gasoline and water.
_________5. In decantation, the use of a strainer
is very important.
23. REFLECTION
Self-check
Check (✔) the appropriate column.
Did you… Yes Partially No
1. separate mixture using
decantation?
2. perform activities with
caution?
Can you… Yes Partially No
1. identify mixtures that can
be separated through
decantation?
2. identify the process of
separating mixtures?
3. apply the decantation
technique in everyday
life??
25. POST TEST (Evaluation)
Direction. Identify if the mixture can be separated through decantation
or not. Write a slash mark (/) in the YES column if it can be separated
through decantation, and a slash mark (/) in the NO column if it can’t
be separated through decantation.
MIXTURES YES NO
1. spaghetti
2. ice cream
3. sand and water
4. oil and water
5. tinolang manok
26. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
In your notebook, cite three (3) examples of how
you are going to apply decantation in your daily
activities at home.
