3. Quality function deployment refers to involving customers in the design stage of new
redesigned products. The idea is to match customer requirements with engineering
characteristics of a product. To facilitate communication and cooperation among
departments, teams that includes representatives from manufacturing, marketing and
engineering collaborate on the design. (Stevenson)
Quality function deployment – a process or determining customer requirements (customer
“wants”) and translating them into the attributes (the “how’s”) that each functional area
can understand an act on. (Render, Heizer)
Quality function deployment refers to both
1. Determining what will satisfy the customer and
2. Translating those customer desires into target design.
The idea is to capture a rich understanding of customer wants and to identify alternative
process solutions. This information is then integrated into evolving product design. QFD is
used early in the design process to help determine what will satisfy the customer and
