SAFETY CORNER
We have all heard the expression, “Look before you leap,” but how often do we do that, how often do we
actually stop, look around, evaluate a situation and consider the consequences of our actions? With the
2016 theme “Look, Listen, Live,” we will drive home the message that the safety process must start with
a simple evaluation of each task and a willingness to listen to the advice of those around us.—Danny
Minnix, Corporate Director of Safety & Risk
Safety Luncheon—Greensboro, NC
Branch Highways continues
construction on the US-220/Future
I-73 @ NC 68 interchange. Led by
Project Superintendent, James Lowe,
Project Manager, Matt Hindt and
Project Engineer, Todd Collins, will
convert the at grade intersection into
an interchange. The contract work
consists of a 145 FT bridge structure,
563,000 CY of earthwork, 2700 LF of
storm drain, and 63,000 TNS of asphalt.
• Beginning in September 2015, Milestone #1 included
constructing a temporary traffic detour and traffic signal in
order to allow bridge construction to begin. It was critical to
switch traffic on the detour because the northern end bent
of the bridge was in the middle of the US 220 travel lanes.
This traffic switch was completed in May of this year.
• Milestone #2 consists of completing bridge construction by
the end of August and switching traffic over the bridge in
September.
• The final milestone entails completing the overall project
on or before November 15, 2016.

Completed in July, this NCDOT project,
located at Campbell University in Buies
Creek, North Carolina was led by Project
Engineer, Nathan Barker. A pedestrian
tunnel was installed under US-421,
allowing Campbell students to safely
walk under the roadway to the football
field.
• In Phase 1 Branch Highways shut
down US-421 for 40 days to excavate
dirt and install the tunnel. During the
closure Branch Highways rerouted
the existing 20” waterline by installing
2 16” line stops. The 309 LF waterline
was rerouted to avoid excavation.
• Phase 2 consisted of building 3 MSE
Walls, installing tunnel ramps, stairs,
and handrail. Curb and gutter and
pavement were installed after the
walls were built.
• During Phase 3 traffic was shifted to
the outside lanes, the center median
was installed, the final surface layer
of asphalt was paved and the thermo
line striping completed.
CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY
PEDESTRIAN TUNNEL
Located in Guilford County, NC and led
by Assistant Project Manager, Matt Hindt,
Branch Highways completed this NCDOT
project in July.
Prior to the project start date utilities
were relocated due to the overhead
power lines conflicting with the new
alignment. The existing Neelley Road
intersection on Route 421 was removed
and a safer on and off ramp that
included a bridge was constructed.
Additionally, Branch Highways completed
improvements to four roads in the project
area for the local community.
NCDOT NEELLEY ROAD (US-421)
Additions to the scope included:
• Erosion control
• 2 large box culverts
• A 1 acre pond was drained to
facilitate fill for the new roadway
