Tissue
culture
TISSUE CULTURE:
The growth of tissues in or on an artificial medium outside an
organism
• the tissue is removed from a plant or animal and grown in
glassware (in-vitro) under carefully controlled conditions.
• Growth is by mitosis & produces a cluster of identical
offspring's (clones)
APPLICATIONS OF TISSUE
CULTURE:
• Plant breeding – micropropagation – growing large number
of plants from a small piece of a plant
• Skin grafts
ADVANTAGES OF
MICROPROPAGTION:
•Produces large numbers quickly
•Clones
•No outside pollinators
•Cheap
ADVANTAGES OF SKIN GRAFTS:
•Grow skin to cover wounds.
CELL
TISSUE
ORGAN
SYSTEM
Animal: White blood
cell
Animal: Nervous
tissue
Plant: vascular tissue
Animal: lungs
Plant: root
Animal: digestive
Plant: shoot system
KEY DEFINITIONS:
• Cell = smallest unit of life
• Tissue = group of similar cells that are modified to carry out
the same functions
• Organ = group of tissues that work together for a particular
function
• System = group of organs working together for a particular
function
