2. Record store I picked.
The record store I
selected is located in
Chicago,IL. The store
is called Reckless
Records
3. Reckless Records ( Chicago)
• For 30 years, Reckless Records has been the Windy City’s go-to indie spot
for CDs, vinyl and DVDs; currently, it has three locations open seven days a
week in di
ff
erent neighborhoods. The store, which originally had London
roots, has a vibe so homey that its Wicker Park location inspired the look of
the movie High Fidelity. It’s stores contain bins and bins of used vinyl with
lived-in title cards, but it also makes it a point to highlight new music. Their
best sellers are primarily indie-centric titles on labels like Matador, Sub Pop,
4AD, Merge, etc. But they take pride in stocking everything from, say, the new
Beyoncé CD to a cassette by an up-and-coming local artist to a reissue of a
mostly unknown African psychedelic rock band or an obscure techno 12-
inch. They are always on the lookout for new artists, limited-edition pressings,
imports and unique items.”
6. RESEARCH QUESTION
Do you o
ff
er consignment to indie artists?
The record store does provide cosignment to indie artists. After researching
their website, I was able to see they did provide an in-store signing and
performance for artists. However, the last one hosted there was back in 2019.
7. RESEARCH QUESTION
• How often do marketing reps visit from the record labels?
There was no information on the labels that the store is a
ffl
iated with. Nor was
I able to get any information on if the labels physcially visit the record stores. I
did see a lot of indie music featured on their website. The website had not
been updated since December of 2022.
8. EXCLUSIVES
I picked the Johnny Cash “At Folsom
Prison:50th Anniversary Elegacy Edition”.
They did not have this album in stock in
vinyl , cassett, or CD. I was not able to get
anyone on the phone, however was able to
send in a request to orders to see about
purchasing the vinyl through the website.
9. SWAG
A good example of swag is the
pre-sale link provided with merch
or cool interactive games that link
to new music and content. A good
example is from Yung Mal latest
project he had a game that was
interactive and then leads you to
his project.
10. DTLR
Re
fl
ection: Would you use this store for a local indie
artist’s album release?
I am not sure I would use a local record store to host an album
release. Because I focus mostly on hip-hop music, I would use a
DTLR’s local store for indie artists album release. I would do an in-
store album release and signing. There are several records stores in
Atlanta, GA. But the one that gathers the most support is DTLR ( a
local sneaker store).DTLR doesnt just sell apprael and shoes, they
also have a radio station and promote the music.Their radio station
also registers on BDS which is big when looking for spins. DTLR
has over 40 stores located throught the East Coast and South.
Something that I have seen to be super successful in the launching
of several artists in Atlanta, GA is the in-store releases at DTLR.
Depending on the artist I would use a co-sign for the artist. And in
the Atlanta area if the artists is coming out from a certain area they
will already have co-signs from some of the biggest artists like Lil
Baby, 21 Savage, 2 Chainz, T.I., Young Thug, etc. When launching
for the artists I manage signed to 300 Ent., DTLR hosted the in-
store in the area closest to where the artist lives. They also have a
college tour for all the HBCU’s that they o
ff
er to upcoming artists as
well. The cross promotion from the clothing industry to the music
world helps with crossing the artists to a di
ff
erent audience that
might not know about their music.
