WHATISPLASTIC…?????
 PET- Polyethylene terephthalate

 DISPOSAL
WHAT IS ECO-BRICK TECHNOLOGY..???
 Found first in NIGERIA.
 Empty waste plastic bottle + sand or cement slurry
filling = brick
 Using this technique in construction
 Replacing bricks with ECO-BRICKS.
WHY IS ECO-BRICK PREFFERD..???????
 Repurposing used PET bottles into useful building
materials
 Well insulated
 Sturdy
 Cheaper
 Easy to build
 Great way to solve homelessness in economically
backward countries.
WHERE IS ECO-BRICK TECHNOLOGY
IMPLEMENTED….????
WHERE……?????
 Origin – NIGERIA
 Central America - Guatemala
 Many organizations come forward helping the poor
and homeless
 ECOTEC
 Hugitforward by purnaveda organization
 SAMARPAN foundation – INDIA
Tamilnadu, hyderabad.
 My shelter foundation -Philippines
CONSTRUCTION PROCESS…
 Collect
 Fill them with sand or cement paste
 Seal them with cement paste.
 Construction of foundation
 Construction of pillar and columns
 Construction of wall.
 Leveling of floors.
 Plastering and painting of wall.
STEP1:COLLECTNGTHEPLASTIC
While collecting the
plastic bottles..
They may be of
different capacities
and different
thickness.
We need to collect
them accordimg to
their capacities.
STEP2:FILLINGOFSANDORCEMENTPASTE.
In the filling
process…
We can use
-Sand paste
-Cement paste
--Sand and mud
slurry
--Plastic papers and
plastic waste.
STEP3:CONSTRUCTIONOFPILLAR
Place a rod in
between and
construct a pillar.
The bottles are
attached with
concrete cement
paste.
Tie a thread along
the cap of the
bottles.
Nylon ropes are
also used as thread
here.
STEP4:CONSTRUCTTHEWALL
Mostly circular
walls are preferred
in these
construction
technique.
STEP5:PLASTERINGOFWALLS.
Plastering of walls
is done by cement
paste.
Sometimes sand
and mud slurry is
also preferred.
COMPARISON BETWEEN
 time of execution is 15 %
faster.
 Saving in cement, water,
grinder and fitting
 Lighter and higher volume,
easy and cheap displacement.
 Strength – 20 TIMES MORE
THAN BRICK
 Time required is more.
 More weight, more materials.
 Greater weight, less volume,
hard and costly displacement
 High weight and loss of
materials.
 Strength- GREATER WALL
THICKNESS,LOWER
STRENGTH.
Plastic bottle wall Brick wall
ADVANTAGES
 reducing environmental pollution especially in cities, villages, rivers, lakes and seas.
 simple recycling system, applicable worldwide.
 recycling system uses human –thus renewable, energy.
 recycles all plastic waste, soft and clean, without distinction; including cigarette butts,
Styrofoam, metallic paper wrapping, plastic bags, etc.
 avoids transport of waste, as the purpose is to collect local garbage.
 takes cubic meters of plastic into constructions, avoiding those to end up in dumping sites, in
rivers or seas.
 provides new livelihood activities for people working at dumping sites, new skills for masons,
new opportunities for construction companies.
 contributes to reducing emissions to the atmosphere, since it replaces pollutant construction
materials.
 reduces high CO2 emission and deforestation caused by bricks making which production
requires lots of energy, of wood and generates lots of CO2.
 avoids the purchase and transport of conventional construction materials, it can be sourced
locally.
 effective isolating material.
 earthquake-resistant
 Homes made from recycled plastic bottles, such as the typical round shaped Nigerian homes,
are bullet-proof and earthquake resistant.
 They are fire-proof while keeping a snug year-round temperature of 64 degrees F.
DISADVANTAGES
 The constructions done using this technology are
only temporary as it is ongoing research.
 The compressive strength and tensile strength
which determines the strength of the construction is
not determined.
 Providing of plumbing and electricity lines is still not
proper.
 The threatening disadvantage is pollution as if this
technology is adapted world wide , then there is a
risk of increase in production of plastic.
CORRECTION OF DRAWBACK
 Research is going on in this technique so the
correction is expected.
 Plumbing and electricity can be done by providing
piping lines at the construction stage.
 Solar energy can be used for electricity.
CONCLUSION
 Reusing the plastic bottles as the building materials
can have substantial effects on saving the building
embodied energy by using them instead of bricks in
walls and reducing the CO2 emission in
manufacturing the cement by reducing the
percentage of cement used. It is counted as one of
the foundation’s green project and has caught the
attention of the architecture and construction
industry. Generally the bottle houses are
bioclimatic in design, which means that when it is
cold outside is warm inside and vice versa.
