Audience definition
1. HOW DO YOUR PRODUCTS ENGAGE
WITH THE AUDIENCE AND HOW
WOULD THEY BE DISTRIBUTED AS
REAL MEDIA TEXTS?

2. TARGETING AUDIENCES
• In order to understand different audiences I had
to research into how different media
groups/businesses target and find the right
audience. As a result, I needed to know what
audiences there are (factors that may be relevant
include age, gender, ethnicity, social class), what
their media needs are (so that I could produce a
product that they will want) and how to reach
them (to market my film). I will show how my
research has shaped / influenced my planning.
3. In order to understand how media groups
define their audiences - I looked at Bauer
Media (in particular Kiss Radio). As you can see
from the screenshot, Kiss Radio define their
audience as a 15-34, 60/40 female to male
split and is united by their love of music. As a
result, I could take into consideration age
ranges and gender when attempting to market
our film. To do so, we could ask an audience to
complete an audience questionnaire which we
made to explore different audiences and gain
any interest from different genders, ages and
more.
4. NME (New Musical Express) is a musical news media business
who create magazines which inform their audience about new
music which has been released and the newest gossip about
their audiences’ favourite artists. NME tend to target younger
males (69% male, 31% female). To present their target audience,
NME produce collages of their supposed target audience which
importance begins in the top left hand corner of the collage.
From this you can instantly tell what kind of interests their
audience has but in case you didn’t quite grasp it, there is
written stats in green boxes which state the audience they aim
for.
5. Sky Media present their target audience using data
graphs such as pie graphs (as shown on the left). This
therefore clearly showers what kind of audience that
Sky define. In this case, you can clearly see Sky Media
obtain a 52%/48% male to female audience
alongside an average monthly reach of 16million
people. This is something which I may take into
consideration when looking to define my own
audience for my film opening as it is a clear
representation of this audience which I am aiming
for. Lastly, I feel like gender is one of the more
important factors when defining an audience as it
seems to come up with every media group’s
audience definitions.
