They are several different mehtods of research that you can do to find your Target Audience. Each
on of these methods are different because they all have different techniques in finding the results
and displaying the reuslts in different manors.
Quantitative research is when you produce graphs, charts and look into figures of how many people
watch certain programmers. It’s an easy way of finding out your target audience. The graphs you can
produce can give you an idea of what
proportion of people like to watch certain
specific programs where in the country they are
most popular. Reasons why you would use this
research are,to quantify data and generalize
results from a sample to the population of
interest. To measure the incidence of various
views and opinions in a chosen sample.
Sometimes followed by qualitative research,
which is used to explore some findings further.
This form of research is similar to Qualitative
research in that they are both methods of
creating results in the form of graphs and diagrams, which give a perspective of comparisons of
forms of research in terms of audeinces and reuslts.
Qualitative research is when you make an examination and analysis observations for the purpose of
discovering underlying meanings and patterns of relationships. This involves producing surveys and
questioners which help you in getting answers and opinions on certain topics, such as target
audience. Once getting the answers and results, you can go on and edit your business or project to
fit in around the answers you receive. Reasons why you should use Qualitative Research are to gain
an understanding of underlying reasons and motivations. To provide insights into the setting of a
problem, generating ideas and/or hypotheses for later quantitative research. To uncover prevalent
trends in thought and opinion. But with this form of research, Findings are not conclusive and cannot
be used to make generalizations about the population of interest. Develop an initial understanding
and sound base for further decision making.
Below is in image of differences between the 2 types of research.
Socio-economic statusis the division of classes like
upper class, middle class and lower class. Each
individual class ted to watch a different genre or type or
programme on TV. You are divided into a group by your
economical background. Over the UK there are areas
which consist of more of one economical class than
others and are rare to find one with just one class. But
there are more areas covered in lower class people than
upper class as there are more of them. For example soaps are more popular for the lower and
middle class population
. This research is good because it is a simply cut between the types of people you want to fire your
programme or production towards and each catergory of people is different and easily divided. This
form of research is similar to Psycographics because they are both about individual peoples lives and
how their lifestyle and personal habbits can have an effect on whether they are the right people to
aim your product to. On the other hand, this form of research can be discrimianted easily by simily
saying people from poorer backgrounds shouldn’t be then cut away from programmes and genres of
programmes on TV as they may not live the life of the typical lower class person for example.
Psychographicsis the lifestyle and basis or a specific person’s life. There
are different variations of people out there in the world. The mindset
and mental side to a person can vary massively, meaning there are loads
of different sort of target audiences and research has to be put in, in
order for you to create a more successful advert or final product.
This is vital in helping you find the right target audience because it
divides people into separate catergories and groups but In a way so it
doesn’t offend people about their lives but it does it by simply seeing
what they like to watch, what the average type of programmed watch by
a person of their age or race would be and then using that as a method of target audience. This
form of research is similar to Socio-economicand Geo-Demographic research mainly because of the
similarities of lifestyle division as apose to personal prefernces.
Geo-demographicsis the details and figures of where in
the country unemployment is high, what’s popular on TV
etc. Some areas around the country have high levels of
unemployment and these then results in that area being
known as a lower class area. Area’s such as London,
Manchester, Liverpool for example will the most popular
areas for my advert as they are rich places where my
advert will appeal to more people. Poorer areas such as
Middleborough, Bolton and Coventry tend to purchase
cheaper brands. I want to promote my advert in area’s
with a lot of money and main cities.
This is similar to Socia-economic and Psycographics purely because of the factors of searching into
peoples lifestyles and the average of people in certain locations or people in that specific Social
economic group.
These two critical approaches are good for businesses and especially advertisers as they can
determine where to advertise their product. Advertising an expensive product in a poorer area
would be less beneficial to the advertisers / businesses as less people would buy the product.
Demographics is the division between peoples age, gender, sex and race. All these have a massive
effect on their lifestyle and their choice of TV and activates. Sporty people are the type of people my
advert will be aimed towards, so parts to the country are more sporty and social active than others.
My advert will be aimed towards those areas and those specific people.
Personally I believe Quantitative Research is the best form of reseach because the form of displaying
answers and surveys as a diagram or image format is easy to read and understand aswell as
comprehend.
