This document outlines an activity for students to discuss whether Instagram is harmful to teens. It instructs students to:
1. Read an article about quitting Instagram and highlight reasons for and against quitting.
2. Take a poll on whether teens should quit Instagram.
3. Write claims and have discussions in groups about supporting or opposing the idea that Instagram harms teens.
4. Develop arguments for their side and listen to opposing views to identify strengths and weaknesses.
4. Should You Quit Instagram?
• Let’s Read!!! (In groups of 3)
• In table groups, you are to read the article
aloud.
• As you read, you will highlight the reason
for quitting Instagram with pink and
highlight the reason for remaining on
Instagram with blue.
6. Assignment
• Question: Do you think Instagram is
harmful to teens?
• Next, choose a side.
• Create a claim/thesis statement.
(Remember we discussed this
yesterday;-)

1. You have 1 minutes to write down your
thoughts, reactions, questions, or feeling
about your claim.
2. You will pass your papers clockwise and
you will have 1 ½ minutes to read and
respond to the claim and the TRQF. You
are to initial on the line provided and you
will react, comment, question, connect, or
agree/disagree with information you
have read.

TRQF, and person 2 RCQCAD. Then

briefly discuss your claim and TRQF.
10. Develop Your Side’s Arguments
• In pairs, you are to come up with at least 3
points to support your argument with facts
and examples from the text.
11. Listening to Opposing
Arguments
• In pairs, you are to listen to the opposing
view and write down at least 3 arguments
and any weakness to the argument. Be
sure to rank the arguments strongest to
weakest.
12. Closure
• Exit Slip: Discussion Question: Why have
your opinion of Instagram changed for the
better or for the worse because of this
activity?
