We have decidedtoshootthe majorityof ourthrillerfilminmyhouse. Thisis
because ithas goodspatial elementsandstructure thatconformsto the thriller
genre. Forexample,we have plannedtobeginthe filmwithatrackingshotof our
protagonistwalkingupthe stairsandsteppingontothiscorridorthroughthe
archwaysintothe doorway. As the protagonistwalksupthe stairs, itis significantof
the beginningof hisjourney.A staircase isapassage waywhichconnectstwothings,
ideas,places andsoforth.
Despite itssimplicity,the doorway/frame hassignificance of separation;entrance
and exit.Forexample,asthe protagonistentersthe door-lessdoorwayshowninthis
image itis significantof himenteringadarkerpart of hislife, aswhenhe entersthe
bathroomhe watcheshisownlifelesscorpse of avictim.Whenexitingthe doorway
back downthe stairs,it issignificantof himgoingbackto normality. The final scene is
shotin the room at the veryendof the hallwaywhichemphasisesthe ideaof sinister
acts onlytakingplace past the white doorframe. The only sense of normalityshown
inthe Filmisbefore the doorframe, outside the house, whichinfersthe negative
significance
and symbolismsurroundingthe doorframe.
The bathroomscene iscrucial inthe filmas itis the openingscene of the film.In
addition, thisiswhere the introductionof the charactersandthe plot takesplace. This
bathroomisideal forthe scene as it isreasonablyspaciouswhichallowsusto
experimentwithdifferent,creativeshottypesandanglesaswe have roomto re-position
the camera and tripodeasilyaswell asthe propsand so forth. We planto shootthe
protagonistlookingathimself inthe mirrorwhile he washeshishandstofullyportray
himas a characterphysically.Due tothe space behindthe bathroomwe are able to
angle the camera towardsthe mirrorto showboth the reflectionof the protagonist and
the protagonisthimself.Thisisconformingtothe thrillergenre,specificallythe filmnoir
genre,whichwe are takinginspirationfrom. Reflectionsandviewsof facesthrough
objects,(suchasmirrors) are typical of the genre.Hence ourchoice to do the mirror shot
and furthermore,one of the initialreasonsforshootinginabathroom.
For the middle partof our film,we are goingto shooton thisroad, outside
my house.Thisisfirstlytocreate a sense of continuitydue tothe restof
the shotsbeinginside the house. Furthermore itensurespracticality,as
we will be able toshoot all of the filminone locationandpreferablyover
lesstime.Thisispractical due to beingable to experimentwithdifferent
shottypesfor longerandgainas much footage as possible, sowhenit
comesto editingwe have numerousoptionswhendeciding onthe best
shots. Asidesfromthe practicalityelement,thislocation isperfect
visually, sense thatitisn’tamodernhouse.Itis picturesque and
complimentselementsof the filmnoirgenre,whichisthe sub-genre of
our thrillerfilm.
We planto shootthe meetingof the victimandthe protagonistalongthe
road shown.Asyoucan see fromthe followingimages, the roadisquite
wide.Thisisperfectforusas we are able to shoota varietyof shots. For
example,we canexperimentwithcomposition.Inaddition,due tothe
widthof the road, we can shootwide, midandclose up shotsof the
protagonistfromthe otherside of the road, to show the surroundingsand
location,aswell asdramaticintensityof emotions.
Initially, earlierinthe planningprocess,we hadplannedtopotentiallyshootthe outside partsof ourfilminmore of
a cityscape setting, whichwouldhave completelychangedboththe visualsandatmosphere of ourwhole film. We
exploredsettingthe filminamore industrial areaof Norwich, suchasa blockof flats. However,aftermind-mapping
potential locationsanddiscussingitwe decidedagainstitasitwouldn’tcomplimentandconformtothe filmnoir
genre.
For the thirdand final scene inourfilm,we plantoshootit inthe
bedroomat the endof the hallwayfirstshown. Thisisanideal locationas
the room (shownbelow)isextremelyadaptable.We wantthe focusinthe
final shotto be completelyonthe protagonistasitisthe climax of the plot
where he realiseshe mustkill the womanhe previouslymet. Therefore
the mise-en-scene mustbe simplisticandminimal. We plantoremove the
lampand booksand place onlya fewcandlesonthe side.Furthermore we
will cutout the paintingsoutof the shot,so the backgroundof the shotis
blank,makingthe compositionsimple. The bed-sheetswill alsobe a
simple white andthe bedmade,whichagain,ensuresasimple
composition,andthe focustobe entirelyonthe emotionsof the
character and whatis occurringinthe filmatthat time.
