Props:  Here are some examples of the props we are planning to use: Sympathy Card: This will feature in our Thriller Film at the beginning. John will receive this card, amongst others, expressing sympathy for the loss of his wife, but this particular card will stand out to him as it is mysteriously unsigned. The card will be picked up from the doormat and we will see John opening the card. As this is a major clue leading to the killer this moment will be highlighted by use of different camera shots and effects.  The thriller convention that is links to is ‘crime at the core of the narrative, often murder but not necessarily’ as the card highlights and makes clear that someone has died.  It could also link to the convention ‘ a narrative pattern of establishing enigmas’ as this is a clue that will eventually help the storyline unfold.
A Camera This will be used by the murder and the viewer will see him taking pictures of the protagonist, John, leaving his house. This will feature towards the end of our film and the photos will be taken from an alley in which you can see John’s front garden. You will see the murder pick up the camera and then see the photos he has taken, but you will never see his face. The photos taken will later be seen hanging on the wall of his house as if he has been studying the photos. The thriller convention that this links to is ‘A narrative pattern of establishing enigmas’ as the audience will see that John is being followed but will not understand why and will expect the the mystery to be resolved. This relates to a target audience of the young adult/adults and also to technology fans.
A house phone: The audience will see John use his phone towards the middle of our Thriller Film. He will pick up the phone and call his brother in law, who will eventually be revealed to be the real murder. The shot will be taken from the side and will be a long shot of John sitting down whilst on the phone. The Thriller convention that this links to is ‘a complex narrative structure, with false paths, clues, and resolutions’ because it leads him down a false path into thinking that the brother in law, charlie, is someone who he can trust, when really he is the one who has caused every thing.
Other minor props will include: Photos, photo frames, different colored sympathy cards, shoes by the door, clutter and mess in the murders house, Coats, A drink. These everyday props will give a sense of normality and add to the sense of reality that we want to create in our Thriller Film. This links to the thriller convention of ‘extraordinary events happening in an ordinary situation’ and that murder and crime can happen in everyday life.
Costumes John has a range of costume options for different scenes: He will wear a dark suit showing that he is mourning the loss of his late wife and giving the impression that he is attending to business regaurding her death – furneral ect. He could also wear casual clothes, an everyday shirt and jeans, relaxed but still looking smart to reflect his character. The murder’s costume will be dark to show his dark intentions. He will wear black trousers and a black fleece jumper. His costume will be dull to show that he is trying to blend into the background so as not to be pinpointed as a suspect.
Setting and mise en scene: All of the lighting in our film will be natural to make our Thriller look as realistic to everyday life as possible. The main setting and mise en scene will be in Johns own house, the house will be well presented and of a medium size to relfect his comfortable background and lifestyle. We have yet to find a suitable location and set of ‘Johns House’ but it will most likely be either mine or one of my peers houses as we will have easy access and permission to film in this location. We want the mise en scene of the house to look natural so that the audience relate to John and so the pre existing furniture and decor will be suitable for this aspect of our mise en scene. Another location will be the murders room which will be very dark and messy to relfect his mindset, the darkness will be natural and shall be created by closing the door of the room and drawing curtains across windows. We will use a local alley, near our school in Upminster, to film the section where Charlie is taking the photos, we want this to look realistic so we will leave the alley in its pre-existing state.
