Solution Architect
For the secondary release of the DEC Business Intelligence roadmap, Matthew
was re-engaged at DEC as a Solution Architect to lead the design of logical and
physical data models (using the Sparx Enterprise Architect tool), ETL mapping,
SQL Server data marts, and the BI Reporting solution (consisting of Microsoft
SSAS Tabular Models, and Microsoft SSRS reports and dashboards). The role
also required Matthew to facilitate and lead client engagement (design review
meetings, risks and issues, project governance), lead daily standups with the
SMS team, provide weekly status updates to the SMS management team, and
to liaise with other members of the project leadership team (Test Manager,
Business Analysts, Program Sponsors, Project Management).
Stockland
Time, Revenue, and Cost
(TRAC) Application
MS SSIS Developer
Matthew was engaged in the final stages of the implementation of Stockland’s
new ERP application ‘TRAC’, designed to manage projects, inventory and
financial feasibility. Although primarily a .Net UI application, TRAC also required
a one-off initial data migration as well as a daily load of data from various other
systems across Stockland. To meet these requirements, Matthew designed and
built a Microsoft SSIS ETL solution based on an existing Stockland ETL
framework. The solution also required Matthew to design and model a target
data mart in SQL Server using SQL Server Data Tools and Team Foundation
Server, as well as writing Solution Deployment and Operational Support
documentation.

Coates Hire
PROS Pricing Software
Implementation
Technical Lead
– Data Migration
The PROS Pricing Optimisation and Implementation project was established to
enable Coates Hire to deliver dynamic micro-pricing to its branches based on
customer, geography, and duration. This was achieved by integrating existing
Coates Hire enterprise data into the PROS Pricing Solution Suite (PPSS) tool
which performs scientific analysis on that data and provide Coates with a set of
optimised prices based on the outcomes of its analysis. SMS installed a team of
data migration experts led by Matthew to work alongside the PROS
Implementation team to achieve this outcome. The data migration was
achieved using a variation of the SMS Microsoft SSIS ETL Framework that
Matthew had helped to develop. Alongside the solution, Matthew wrote a suite
of documentation including High-Level Solution Design, Detailed Design,
Deployment Guide, and Operational Support documents that are now used by
Coates Hire as templates for all future projects. Matthew also assisted the
Project Manager with project and resource planning, requirements gathering,
risk and issue mitigation, client engagement, testing, deployment, and warranty.

Asset Management System
Data Mart and Cube
Solution Architect / MS SSAS
Developer
Matthew was engaged as part an IDM team assigned to build a SQL Server data
mart and SSAS OLAP cube to store DEC’s asset data. DEC’s asset data is held in
their Asset Management System (AMS) and any data analysis was done via
complex SQL querying. DEC required a solution that removed the need for
these complex queries and allowed for faster and more effective data analysis.
SMS proposed to load data from the current AMS, integrate that data into the
company EDW and then load that integrated data into a SQL Server ‘AMS’ data
mart and to then build an OLAP cube using that data mart as a data source.
Matthew worked alongside the technical lead to create Conceptual, Logical, and
Physical data models for the AMS data, using the Sparx Enterprise Architect
application. Matthew then designed, developed, and tested both the SQL Server
data mart and SSAS OLAP cube.
IAG
Common Information
Model
Data Modeller / Solution
Architect
IAG engaged SMS to lead the development and implementation of a Common
Information Model (CIM) via IBM Industry Model technologies. The first
implementation of its kind in Australia, the project incorporated IAG’s main
business data – Customer, Location, and Asset. Matthew worked with IAG
Solution and Data Architects to design and build a Logical and Physical data
model for each data sector. Matthew gained extremely valuable exposure to the
IBM Rational suite of products and practical experience in implementing IBM
methodology at one of the largest insurance companies in Australia.
NSW Police
Business Technology
Services (BTS)
Reporting Developer
SMS were engaged by NSW Police to replace their legacy Criminal History
Reporting systems with an updated online solution using Java for Crystal
Reports. Matthew was engaged alongside an SMS Java Developer to design,
develop and implement the new solution. Matthew’s principle role was to
develop the replacement reports using the Crystal Reports application, based
on workshops and report prototypes developed in conjunction with the
business. Matthew also worked with the Java Developer to integrate these
reports with the Java front-end user-interface via the Eclipse IDE for Java
development tool.
Department of Climate
Change and Energy
Efficiency (DCCEE)
Consultant
Matthew was engaged as a technical lead at the DCCEE in Canberra. As part of
the Government’s Carbon-Pricing plan, the DCCEE is about to commence a
large-scale BI project to capture, report, and analyse carbon price data. SMS
installed Matthew at the DCCEE to build a set of SQL Server and Microsoft BI
standard documents, technical frameworks, and prototype solutions to present
to the DCCEE Business Intelligence team with the aim to showcase SMS’ BI
capabilities and hence further the engagement. This approach was proven
successful when SMS were chosen as the DCCEE’s primary chosen Business
3. Intelligence providers as a direct result of the work undertaken.
Cathay Pacific
PSS Data Migration
Consultant
Matthew was assigned on a two-week engagement at Cathay Pacific in Hong
Kong. The PSS Data Migration team were in the final stages of building their
solution and Matthew’s task was to provide documentation for the entire end-
to-end process. Matthew liaised with all members of the team to rapidly
familiarise himself with the Data Migration solution. Within the two-week
timescale, Matthew had produced two documents – a 50-page high-level
rationale of the entire process and a step-by-step operational document that
would enable users to run the process from end-to-end.
Australian Council for Arts
(AusCo)
Online Financial Reporting
Microsoft Specialist
As part of SMS’ work at AusCo, they have provided the organisation with an
online financial reporting capability via the Microsoft BI / SQL Server stack. As a
Microsoft specialist, Matthew was engaged to implement a number of Change
Requests to the existing solution, to enhance the efficiency of the ETL and OLAP
functions of that solution. Matthew liaised with the business stakeholders to
develop a suggested implementation strategy and then carried out the work,
including testing, to the defined timescale.
Department of Health &
Ageing (DOHA)
PharmBiz Data Migration
MS SSIS Developer
Based at the DOHA Headquarters in Canberra, Matthew was assigned to assist
the SMS team in the final stages of their Data Migration project, specifically in
the areas of ETL, Data Validation and Testing. Matthew was asked to refine and
combine existing Microsoft SSIS packages and SQL Server scripts into one ETL
solution that could be utilised across different environments when required.
Matthew created an SSIS solution that decreased the total run-time from 2
hours to 30 minutes.
Matthew implemented a variety of changes to the load procedure to increase
its efficiency, such as amending SSIS packages, refining inefficient SQL
processes, adding indexes to tables and removing unnecessary components.
Matthew was also tasked with creating a suite of Data Validation SQL scripts
based on existing business logic and the requirements of the end schema. The
scripts were built and tested and then integrated into the load solution,
allowing the data specialists to identify potential issues before the final load
was executed and sent to client.
4. Telstra
PPRAS -
(Project Protect Analytics &
Reporting Solution)
MS SSAS Developer
Matthew was engaged as assistant to the Technical Lead on Phase 1 of PPRAS,
a project initiated to provide the Billing department at Telstra with a suite of
operational reports combining data from multiple data sources. The initial
Microsoft BI data warehouse solution consolidating data from these multiple
sources was put in place by the Technical Lead. Matthew’s remit was to design
and develop an OLAP data cube on top of the new solution using the Microsoft
SSAS tool and to then build the suite of reports based on that OLAP cube via
Microsoft SSRS.
Matthew worked alongside the Technical Lead to design the SSAS solution
based on the existing data warehouse schema, using dimensional modelling
techniques. He then built the OLAP solution from scratch, based on this design.
Once the SSAS solution was in place, Matthew worked with key stakeholders at
Telstra to finalise a document of reporting requirements and designs. From this
document he created the suite of reports using MS SSRS. On completion of the
development stage, Matthew designed and implemented unit and integration
testing strategies for both the OLAP solution and the reporting suite.
Broadcast Australia
Project SCART
Consultant
Matthew worked in a team of consultants on Project SCART (Service Credit and
Availability Reporting Tool). SMS had been engaged to design and develop a
flexible business intelligence solution to report on service availability and credit
information to the business and their customers, with the need for a self-service
solution that gave the ability of creating reports and interacting with the data to
their analysts and not just the I.T. department.
Matthew was involved in the later stages of the project, where he was required
to design and implement additions and/or amendments to the ETL process via
MS SSIS, create end-user reports via MS SSRS, design and implement testing
strategies, work alongside BA stakeholders in the UAT process, and attend to
any technical issues that arose from the UAT process.
Broadcast Australia
Project NMSII
Support Consultant
Matthew was engaged as support consultant for the roll-out of the Network
Management System (NMS) data warehouse solution. The NMS was installed at
the Network Operation Centre and manages monitoring and control of the
existing broadcast network and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) deployed on site.
SMS were engaged to build a customised data warehouse solution to allow
Broadcast Australia to capture data from the NMS, and a reporting solution for
their network management, fault & asset management systems. Both solutions
were delivered via the Microsoft BI stack. Once these solutions were
implemented, SMS were also engaged to provide third-tier support for the new
systems.
Matthew’s key responsibilities as third-tier support consultant included system
administration (MS SQL Server), report maintenance (MS SSRS) and ETL house-
keeping (MS SSIS). He also liaised with the project Technical Lead to produce
project documentation and support guides, published via MS SharePoint.
