Over the past 20 years, the role of data architects and modelers has changed significantly. Many initiatives are now business-driven as opposed to IT-driven, significantly changing the dynamics of solution delivery. This is compounded by complex environments consisting of a variety of solutions on disparate platforms. Corporate governance is also a growing concern, driving Data Governance, Data Quality and Master Data Management activities.
Today's data architect must be prepared to address all these needs across business and IT. Join this session to learn about:
- Team dynamics and changes in methodologies within IT
- Defining an enterprise modeling strategy in a complex environment
- Modeling techniques to help address these initiatives

Blueprint Consulting
SeniorBI Consultant 1/2014-Present
Provide BI expertise and recommendations to two Service Management groups at Microsoft. Lead a small
team responsible for production Operations and Development for three service groups. Run daily stand-up
meetings and am a key player in the Sprint Planning. Mentor junior members of the team. Design and
manage six end-to-end BI solutions (SQL/SSIS/SSAS/SSRS).
Designed a multi-threaded process for procuring performance metric data from Sharepoint servers. The
database solution is implemented in the Azure cloud environment, polls over 250,000 Sharepoint servers
daily, stores the results in a SQL Server 2014 Database which feeds Analysis Services cubes. End-user results
are delivered via SRSS.
Designed and implemented an end-to-end solution for capturing Call Detail Records and Quality of Experience
information from Skype for Business servers. Resolved issues related to explosively expanding data volumes
from capturing IM, VoIP and Conference session information. The solution included two Operational Data
Stores, SSIS-based ETL processes, SQL Server 2014 Data Warehouses and Cubes. Daily volume exceeds 20
million rows of data; total volume continues to grow but is well over 10 billion rows of fact data and 50 million
rows of dimensional data.
Outerwall
SeniorBI Developer 7/2013-12/2013
Designed and maintained several SSAS cubes, databases and SSIS packages for two lines of business.
Developed a metadata-based engine for processing cube dimensions and partitions. Created relational objects
to support cube processing and SSRS reports. Instituted usage-based aggregation metrics and rationalized
cube design resulting in significantly richer and more accurate metrics while reducing processing time.

Coinstar
SeniorBI Developer 8/2012 – 12/2012
Designed and implemented Star Schema for Coinstar Operational Data Store (ODS) to facilitate consumption
of this data by SQL Server Analysis Services databases. Designed and built SSIS packages capable of loading
approximately 300 Million rows of dimension and fact data in less than 3 hours. The error trapping in this
design resulted in the discovery of several production data anomalies. Provided significant input to table
partitioning design.
Avanade
ATS Seattle BusinessIntelligence Practice Manager 3/2008 – 2/2010
Avanade is a joint venture of Accenture and Microsoft. The Advanced Technology Specialist (ATS) team is a

approach for the Wave II Business Intelligence solution. Mentored two BI developers and provided
design oversight for them.
Microsoft
Drove the tools assessment portion of this project by evaluating the quality of SMSGR’s systems
architecture. Analysis of their code base included evaluating SSIS packages, SSAS cube design stored
procedures and jobs.
Washington Mutual
Designed and built a Proof of Concept system for the beta user, a General Ledger Reporting group.
The POC was implemented as a SQL Server Database functioning as a proxy for the Teradata
database, an Analysis Services cube and small suite of Reporting Services report definitions for a
General Ledger reporting system. Produced infrastructure and security architecture documents for an
implementation using a Teradata back-end, SQL Server Analysis Server intermediate data layer and a
Reporting Server front end.
