The document discusses three comedy films that the author enjoys: Superbad, This Is The End, and The Hangover. For each film, a brief plot summary is provided along with the director and year of production. The author explains that they are attracted to comedy films because they like films that can make them laugh. They also enjoy films with adventure and humor. The author analyzes the films using various film theory concepts such as intertextuality, star theory, and active spectatorship.
2. Genre
The genre that I have chosen is comedy and the
three films that I have picked are ‘Superbad’,
‘This Is The End’ and ‘Hangover’.
3. Superbad
Director - Greg Mottola
Year Of Production – 2007
Seth, Evan and Fogell are three teenage guys who love to
drink and desperately wish to get laid. When a girl that Seth
really likes, asks him to get the drink for her party, he sees this
as a perfect opportunity to make her his girlfriend. The trio
plan out how to get the alcohol, even including Fogell's new
fake ID, but things won't got smoothly for the trio. Seth and
Evan become separated from Fogell (now called McLovin) and
they still haven't got the alcohol for the party that night.
4. This Is The End
Director - Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen
Year Of Production – 2013
All Jay Baruchel expected coming to LA was a fun time with
Seth Rogen with all the wild partying to have both by
themselves and at James Franco's housewarming party.
Suddenly, the Rapture hits and the Biblical Apocalypse has
begun. Now, Jay and Seth are desperately sheltering in James'
house for rescue along with a few other friends. Together,
they must band together to attempt to survive the end of the
world, only for Jay to find that they are all too dumb and
superficial to do it until they discover the only way out.
5. Hangover
Director - Todd Phillips
Year Of Production – 2009
Angelenos Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married, I wish I was married. Two days
before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party - Doug, Doug's two best buddies Phil Wenneck
and Stu Price, and Tracy's brother Alan Garner - hop into Tracy's father's beloved Mercedes convertible
for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas. Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as
his students when he's with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his
controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Stu
has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa
Valley. Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends.
And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world. The
morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover.
None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles. And certain
things are in the suite that shouldn't be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing.
Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. As Phil, Stu and Alan try to find Doug using
only what little pieces of information they have at hand, they go on a journey of discovery of how
certain things got into the suite and what happened to the missing items. However they are on a race
for time as if they can't find Doug in the next few hours, they are going to have to explain to Tracy why
they are not yet back in Los Angeles. And even worse, they may not find Doug at all before the wedding.
6. What Attracts Me To Comedy
Ever since I was young comedy has always been my favourite genre
from TV shows to films. In its simplest terms I like something that can
simply make me laugh. I love films with a lot of adventure and humour.
All of the three films that I have chosen all have an excellent narrative
to them. Superbad is a film about high school students who simply try
to get women like any other typical high school students do. In a way
with me being a college student around the same age as the actors, I
can relate to what they are going through. I simply love the film purely
of that reason, the film simply suits my age range. To other people
who are slightly older than me might not enjoy it as much as I do but
in my opinion in depends on the age range and the sort of humour
they are into.
7. Intertextuality
If we have a look at Hangover we can see that
the narrative is about three men who look after
a baby. In my opinion the narrative of Hangover
reminded a lot of the film Three Men and A
Baby. The film is pretty much about three men
who look after a baby, pretty similar to
Hangover.
8. Star Theory
All three films that I have used all have major stars
in them that would make people want to watch
them simply because they’re in the film. If we look
at Superbad we can see that Jonah Hill is the main
star in the film. People know from his previous films
and how funny he is. If we also look at This is the
end we can see that there a lot of celebrities in the
film but the main ones are James Franco and Jonah
Hill. Some people would watch the film simply
because they’re in the film. The reputation and
popularity that they have is what makes them so
famous in the film industry.
9. Framework Of Interpretation

_S4
We can see that the uses a lot of female representation. This all
falls in the codes of conventions of this film. The film is aimed
specifically at teenagers, this is why we see a lot of female
representation being used, sexually. Again, with this film being
a film aimed at teenagers, alcohol and drugs is expected. From
the trailer we can already predict what kind of narrative the film
will have. The adventure side of this film and the humour side of
this film is what attracts teenagers. In my opinion teenagers can
relate to the narrative a lot due to the adventure side that Jonah
Hill and his friends go on. In terms of the film being humorous, I
think everyone that watches it will find it funny but that being
said there are certain jokes and slangs that only teenagers will
understand. Whereas an older male that watches it might not.
The setting of this film is in a high school in California. In my
opinion they have chosen to film in California due to the fact
that California is a very popular location in terms of good
weather, beautiful women, nice cars etc. In a way places like
California are always expected to be seen in films that are aimed
for teenagers due to how popular it has become in the film
industry.
10. Here we have a film in the same genre as Superbad.
From the trailer that I have used we can see that the
film has a lot of celebrities. Instantly this film would
attract a lot of audience and viewers. From what we
can see from the trailer the narrative of this film is
what makes this film stand out from the normal
adventure/comedy genre. We can see that it has
something to do with the world ending and it goes
into the apocalypse, which is from the bible. From
the trailer we see a lot of alcohol and female
representation being used. In my opinion it falls into
the codes and conventions of this film. We also tend
to see a lot of violence. With this film being an
adventure film I think violence is expected to be in it.
We can tell that the setting of the film is in Los
Angeles. We can see by the big houses, the streets
and the landscaping that this film is in LA. Like I
mentioned with Superbad, places like LA are
expected to be in films such as this. LA is one of the
most popular places in the world. In terms of the film
industry LA has become one of the most popular
places where people go and film. It also makes sense
that this film is shot in LA. Due to the fact that there
are lot of celebrities in this film and LA is known for
seeing a lot of celebrities around the area because a
lot of celebrities live there. It’s a wealthy places, so to
link with this film I think the film producers have tried
to make this film relatable as much as possible in the
real world.

11. Here is a film that highly known for how good the
narrative is. From the trailer we also see a lot of
celebrities that would attract a lot of audience but
not as much as ‘This is the end’. Besides that in the
trailer we see a lot of alcohol being used. It all falls in
to the codes and conventions of this film. From the
trailer we see how much the narrative fascinates the
viewers. We can see how random it is, like for
example finding a tiger in hotel toilet and finding a
baby inside a wardrobe. They have used this simply
to attract viewers. We can also see that the trailer
also shows minor violence scenes. This is expected
in adventure/comedy films. The setting of this film is
what attracts viewers in my opinion. From the trailer
we can see that they have filmed in Las Vegas. Again
like I mentioned with Superbad and This is the end,
Las Vegas is also one of the most popular places in
the world. With that it is also one of the most
popular places where people film. In my opinion
they use popular places to simply attract a lot of
viewers .

12. Media Literacy
There are a lot of ways of finding out about films. In my opinion the most popular way that people find out
about films that are about to come out are through social network websites. Facebook is very popular in
terms of finding out films that are about to come out. People tend to post the actual trailer on Facebook and
through there you will be able to watch it and even make comments about the trailer. With Facebook being
a social website you tend to see a lot of discussions about the trailer on the comment section. Here we get
to see what people thing about the trailer, in terms of their opinions.
Twitter is also a very popular social network website. It’s very similar to Facebook, people tend to post the
links to the trailers on it and from their people can simply view the trailers by simply clicking on the link. A
lot of people tend to go on the IMDB website. It’s a website where you get to see future trailers for films. A
lot of people still do it traditionally where they go on websites such as IMDB to view trailers. In todays
generation in terms of technology we are more assisted in terms of viewing trailers because of all these
social networking websites and apps. In my opinion trailers are the most popular way in terms of finding out
about a film. People who buy a lot of magazines can find out new films through their purchased magazines.
In the magazine itself it will tend to have a small bio about the actual film and this is how people find out
information about the film. Personally, the way I find information about films are through Facebook and
IMDB. It comes down to your own preferred choice at the end of the day. Like I mentioned earlier there are
comment sections where people can give out opinions about films on Facebook, and this is what I like
seeing. I like to see what other people think about future trailer for films.
13. Reception Theory
For this section of this assignment I will be using Superbad as an example. The
narrative of the film is obviously aimed at young adults and teenagers. Other
people’s view of it might be different but viewers who happen to be the age of 16
– 24 especially the male gender will massively enjoy the film due to the fact that
it’s very funny and it’s relatable due to the fact that the film is about young adults
who are very interested in females and sex. Again, people’s views are different,
other people will find it humorous and other people might find it inappropriate.
With me being a young adult it is very easy to understand why I agree with
purpose of this film.
The film has violence, alcohol, drugs and sex in the film. In my opinion people my
age will find those things normal due to the fact that it is expected due to the fact
that it’s a film aimed at teenagers. However a Muslim male around the age of 16 –
24 might not find this film appropriate due to the fact that their culture and views
about certain things are a lot more different to a normal teenager who isn’t
Muslim.
14. Active Spectatorship
Like I mentioned earlier with Superbad and the reception theory is that peoples views
about it are very different. Like I mentioned in the reception theory section is that a
young teenage male who is Muslim will have different views and opinions on the film
because of their culture and how they view certain things. Whereas a young English
teenage male might not. Not everyone has the same views and opinions about all
films especially films such as Superbad where it has lot of bad language, alcohol,
violence and lot of sexual contents.
Active Spectatorship can also relate to ‘Fandom’. Where an audience for a particular
film adopts it as their own. An example that I will using for this section will be he film
Anchor Man. Anchor Man gained a lot of fans and viewers after the film was released
simply because of how funny it was. Which then lead to fan websites and so on.
