3. • We live in the Philippines,our native land.
• The people to this country are called
“Filipinos”.
• Now, in order to know a country well, we study
its history because history is the story of a
country and its people.
5. The name “Philippines”
• Early Chinese traders who visited Mindoro called our
nation “Ma-yi”, meaning Land of gold.
• “Maniolas”- name given by Claudius Ptolemy, a Greek
mapmaker, in his ancient map.
• “Archipelago of St. Lazarus”- name given by
Magellan to our nation in 1521.
• “Felipinas”- a Spanish explorer named Ruy Lopez de
Villalobos gave this name in honor of King Philip II.
6. “Pearl of the Orient Seas”
• Popular nickname for the Philippines.
• This was romantic name given to our
country by two famous writers;

35. Department of Tourism (Philippines)
• The Department of Tourism (Filipino: Kagawaran ng Turismo, DOT) is
the executive department of the Philippine government responsible
for the regulation of the Philippine tourism industry and the
promotion of the Philippines as a tourist destination.
36. DOT History
• Started as a private initiative to promote the Philippines as a major
travel destination, the Philippine Tourist & Travel Association was
organized in 1950. In 1956, the Board of Travel and Tourist Industry
was created by Congress As stipulated in the Integrated
Reorganization Plan in 1972 sanctioned as a law under Presidential
Decree No. 2, as amended, the Department of Trade and Tourism was
established, reorganizing the then Department of Commerce and
Industry. A Philippine Tourism Commission was created under the
unified Trade and Tourism Department to oversee the growth of the
tourism industry as a source of economic benefit for the country.
37. DOT History
• In 1973, President Ferdinand Marcos created a new cabinet-level
Department of Tourism (DOT) by splitting the Department of Trade
and Tourism into two separate departments. Included in the new
Department of Tourism, the agency Philippine Tourism Authority
(PTA) and the Philippine Convention Bureau (PCB) were created. The
Department of Tourism was then renamed Ministry of Tourism as a
result of the shift in the form of government pursuant to the
enforcement of the 1973 Constitution.
38. DOT History
• In 1986, under Executive Order Nos. 120 and 120-A signed by
President Corazon Aquino, the Department of Tourism was
reorganized and, correspondingly, the Convention Bureau was
renamed the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation, and the
Intramuros Administration was attached, previously being under the
defunct Ministry of Human Settlements. In 1998, the Department of
Tourism assumed a prominent role in culmination of centennial
celebration of the country's independence from the Spanish Empire
in 1898.
39. DOT History
• In 2003, the Department of Tourism initiated one of its most
successful tourism promotion project, WOW Philippines', under
Secretary (now Senator) Richard J. Gordon.
• The latest improvements in the tourism industry in the country came
about with the passage of Republic Act No. 9593 or the "Tourism Act
of 2009."
42. TOURISM PROMOTIONS BOARD PHILIPPINES
• An attached agency of the Department of Tourism, the Tourism
Promotions Board (TPB) exists to market and promote the Philippines
domestically and internationally as a world-class tourism and MICE
destination, in strategic partnership with private and public
stakeholders to deliver a unique high-value experience for visitors,
significantly contributing to increased arrivals, receipts and
investments to the country.
43. • Its MICE Department provides comprehensive information, technical
assistance and guidance to business events and meeting planners and
organizers. In addition, TPB offers its expertise through the following
range of complimentary services:
a. Set up linkages with government and private entities
b. Propose pre and post tour itineraries
c. Attendance promotion assistance
d. Welcome lei reception and other special arrangements upon arrival
of delegates

Tourism Promotions Board
45. SECTION 45. Tourism Promotions Board
• SECTION 45. Tourism Promotions Board. – Under the supervision of
the Secretary and attached to the Department for purposes of
program and policy coordination shall be a body corporate known as
the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB). The TPB shall formulate and
implement an integrated domestic and international promotions and
marketing program for the Department.
46. SECTION 46. Mandate.
• SECTION 46. Mandate. – The TPB shall be responsible for marketing
and promoting the Philippines domestically and internationally as a
major global tourism destination, highlighting the uniqueness and
assisting the development of its tourism products and services, with
the end in view of increasing tourist arrivals and tourism investment.
Specifically, it shall market the Philippines as a major convention
destination in Asia.
47. SECTION 46. Mandate.
• To this end, it shall take charge of attracting, promoting, facilitating,
and servicing large-scale events, international fairs and conventions,
congresses, sports competitions, expositions and the like. It shall
likewise ensure the regular advertisement abroad of the country’s
major tourism destinations and other tourism products, not limited to
TEZs. It may also provide incentives to travel agencies abroad which are
able to draw tourists and tourism investments to the country.
48. The TPB is responsible for:
• Marketing and promoting the Philippines domestically and internationally as a
major global tourism destination, highlighting the uniqueness and assisting the
development of its tourism products and services, with the end in view of
increasing tourist arrivals and tourism investments;
• Marketing the Philippines as a major Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and
Exhibitions (MICE) destination;
• Attracting, promoting, facilitating and servicing large scale events, international
fairs and conventions, congresses, sports competitions, expositions and the like;
• Ensuring the regular local and international advertisement of the country’s
major tourism destinations and other tourism, including Tourism Enterprise
Zones (TEZ); and
• Providing incentives to travel agencies, tour operators, wholesalers and
investors abroad capable of drawing a sizeable number of tourists and tourism
investments to the country.
